Overview

Mounting a Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail in 2001 was a bit like riding with a piece of American history bolted beneath you. This motorcycle didn’t hide; it displayed itself, with its parallelogram front end that was almost worth the price of the entire machine. This Springer fork, a concept from the 1930s revived after the war, was a style statement more than a technical feat. Heavier and more complex than a telescopic fork, it offered a certain comfort and a devastating look, but it also imposed its limitations. The biggest drawback came from the brakes: when Harley modernized its range with the new 1450 cc engine, this Springer was left behind, retaining its old calipers. On a machine weighing 340 kg fully fueled, with a nearly 19-liter tank, a single 292 mm front and rear disc brake was not enough. It was an obvious weakness, almost dangerous for a custom of this mass.

Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail

Yet, the heart of this Softail deserved better. The Twin Cam 88B, with its 1450 cc, delivered 67 horsepower at 5400 rpm and a monstrous torque of 108.9 Nm from 3500 rpm. Compared to the old 1340, it had more range, more voluptuousness, and the five-speed gearbox was more precise. The belt drive and the steel double cradle frame ensured a healthy, almost quiet ride, except for the braking which too much recalled the past years. The announced top speed of 170 km/h was probably a theory, because in practice, one focused more on the ample roll and the deep sound of the 45° V. For a tester, the contradiction was glaring: improved mechanics coupled with an obsolete safety system.

The Springer Softail clearly targeted the purist, the collector, the one who wanted a Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail as a showpiece more than for performance. With a 658 mm seat height and a dry weight of 315 kg, it was accessible, but handling in the city required anticipation. The suspensions, a parallelogram at the front with 107 mm of travel and two horizontal shock absorbers at the rear, were designed for straight lines and long roads, not for tight turns. The 80/90-21 and 130/90-16 tires, often with whitewalls on the Heritage version, confirmed this vocation of a classic cruiser.

Today, this motorcycle is almost a museum piece, a model that some assemble via a kit like the Testors Harley-Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail 1/9 model kit for the pleasure of the miniature. At the time, its price of 19,990 euros was an investment for timeless style, but with technical compromises. It did not rival the more spirited Japanese customs or the newer, better-equipped Harleys. It was a statement, a mechanical whim for those who prioritized emotion over efficiency. Riding a Springer meant accepting its flaws to savor its unique character, a raw experience where each ride became a spectacle.
