Overview
Do you remember the era when a Harley was defined by its matte black paint, a high handlebar, and minimal chrome? That was the ambition of the 2000 FXSTB Night Train, a machine that seemed to have come from a clandestine garage rather than the workshops of Milwaukee. With its Softail frame mimicking the lines of a 1950s rigid, it played the card of raw authenticity, but with the conveniences of a modern motorcycle.

Its heart, the 1450 cc Twin Cam B, announced 63 horsepower and a torque of 106 Nm at 3200 rpm. Figures that, on paper, seem modest compared to some Japanese cruisers of the time. But here, the experience surpasses the dynamometer. The large V2 vibrates with an organic regularity, its balancer limiting the shudders without eradicating them. It is this palpitation, this deep sound, and this immediate response to throttle opening that seduce, not the specs sheet. The five-speed gearbox, revised for this year, was more precise, while the brakes, a single disc at the front and rear, did just enough with the 305 kg weight when fully fueled.
Harley-Davidson understood that Europe appreciated a more restrained style, less ostentatious. The Night Train responded to this demand with its 19-liter black fuel tank, its 21 and 16-inch wheels, and this low seat at 638 mm. It was not a performance motorcycle, its top speed flirting with 170 km/h, but a machine of presence. A custom for those who want to ride with a worked look, without the usual catalog frippery. Compared to a more developed Fat Boy or a more stylized Deuce, it presented itself as the discreet and determined option.
Today, this Night Train is a witness to an era when Harley was trying to reconcile tradition and technical evolution. Its price, around 17800 euros at the time, placed it in the high-end of the cruiser segment. For the Harley purist enthusiast, it remains a pivotal model, featuring the first Twin Cam and a balance between road handling and radical aesthetics. Not the most versatile, nor the most comfortable on long distances with its short suspensions, but a style statement that continues to speak to those who believe that the essence of a motorcycle lies in its character, not in its statistics.
