Overview

Who said a Harley couldn’t have a dark and edgy side? In 2002, the Night Train arrived as a style statement straight from Milwaukee, but with a European touch in its soul. Initially designed for the Old Continent, this Softail ended up seducing the entire planet with its aggressive minimalism. Its name is no coincidence: here, everything, or almost everything, is black. The faux-rigid frame, the engine, the wheels, the bodywork elements… A veritable declaration of war on sparkling chrome, an assumed bias that gives it a unique aura within the Harley catalog.

Harley-Davidson FXSTB Night Train

The heart of the beast is this famous Twin Cam 1450, an overhead valve V2 that delivers 63 horsepower. A figure that doesn’t make the sticker leaves tremble, but that’s forgetting the essential: its 106 Nm of torque, available from 3500 rpm. This surge of traction is the signature of the Harley engine. It growls, it pulses, it transmits a sensation of brute force through the frame, without becoming exhausting thanks to its balance shaft. The five-speed gearbox, revised in 2000, plays along with sharper shifts, even if it remains a Harley gearbox, precise but never rushed. At a standstill, with its 302 kg fully fueled, it commands respect. In motion, it surprises with its balance, supported by a low center of gravity and a 678 mm seat that puts most riders at ease.

But don't be fooled, the Night Train is not a motorcycle for pure performance enthusiasts. Its single disc braking front and rear is just adequate, and its front tire in 90/80-21 imposes a rather slow and relaxed steering. With a top speed announced at 160 km/h, it is clearly not made for the track, nor even for highway bursts. Its playground is the country road, the long straight lines where you can savor the purring of the big twin and its bad boy look. The 18.9-liter tank promises beautiful ranges between stops, for road trips where you take your time.

Facing the competition, like some Yamaha Virago or Honda Shadow of the time, the Night Train plays a radically different card. It doesn’t seek versatility or ease. It sells a style, an attitude, a belonging to a world. At more than 17,000 euros at the time, it was a significant investment, reserved for purists who wanted a clean and black base, ready to be customized, or for those who adhered to its stripped-down aesthetic without compromise.

So, who is it for? For the globetrotter who prioritizes sensation over statistics, for the aesthete who sees in it an ideal customization base, for those who want a Harley with a radical look without breaking the bank on catalog accessories. It is not perfect, it is heavy, not very agile and technically outdated. But it has that character, that presence and that visceral sound that, even today, turns heads and makes the hearts of its followers beat. It’s a motorcycle with a story, not a record-breaker.
