Overview
Imagine a motorcycle that doesn’t speak, but roars. Not with numbers, but with a presence. The 2004 FXSTB Night Train is that object. Harley-Davidson, often seen as a manufacturer of American folklore, has here made an interesting gesture: it let its European engineers design this machine. A Softail initially destined for the old continent’s market, before conquering the global catalog. It’s a motorcycle that proves that minimalist style and clean lines can also be a universal language for the Milwaukee firm.

Its name is a program. Night Train. Everything is black, or should be. The frame, the engine, the wheels. This shade is not a detail; it is the essence. It absorbs light and rejects all frivolity. Technically, it rests on the famous Softail frame, this perfect illusion that masks the shock absorbers to give an old-fashioned rigid line, while the 1449 cc Twin Cam B engine sits at the center. With 63 horsepower and 104 Nm of torque, the numbers are not staggering, but they are where they need to be: massive torque arrives from 3200 rpm, ready to pull you without ceremony. The Twin Cam, with its balancer, vibrates with a civilized roughness, a mechanical rumor that speaks without becoming unbearable.
On the road, it’s not a machine for numbers. With a wet weight of 305 kg and a seat at 640 mm, it imposes a stature, a low and wide seat. The announced top speed of 160 km/h is almost an anecdote; what counts is the feeling of constant propulsion, the belt drive that works without a sound, the five-speed gearbox revised for 2000. The brakes, two 292 mm discs with four-piston calipers, are correct for the time, but one will not seek the braking performance of a modern sportbike. It’s a motorcycle for swallowing horizons, not for counting them.
Who is it for? The traveler who prefers atmosphere to speed, aesthetics to the spec sheet. The one who wants a Harley-Davidson in its more restrained form, perhaps more European, without excessive chrome. Compared to other Softail models of the time, like the Deuce, the Night Train stands out with this monochrome radicalism, this almost austerity that becomes its main charm. Its 18.9-liter tank announces long journeys, and its appearance follows you even when standing still.
Ultimately, the 2004 Night Train is a statement. Not the most powerful, not the lightest, but one of the most consistent in its message. It shows that Harley-Davidson could, at the time, design a machine with a pure and direct style, a vehicle where every choice—the color, the line, the layout of the engine—served a simple idea: to be a black and massive presence in the landscape. A night train, silent and imposing, that passes and leaves a lasting trace.
