Overview
Is it still a Harley when its engine no longer shakes the rider like a plum? That’s the question raised in 2007 with this FLSTC Softail Heritage Classic, a machine that seems to have made a radical choice: prioritizing long journeys over vibrational tradition. With its 96B Twin Cam of 1584 cm3, Milwaukee introduces a balance shaft, a revolution for the brand. The result is a V-twin engine that delivers 116.7 Nm of torque from 3200 rpm, a monstrous pulling force, but which translates to relative smoothness. Purists will grind their teeth, but the pragmatic touring rider will find it worthwhile: 70 horsepower and a nearly 19-liter tank make this Heritage a serious road trip companion.

Weight, however, remains rooted in tradition: 341 kg fully fueled. It’s a mass that is felt, especially at low speed or in tight turns. But the 648 mm seat height and the Softail frame geometry, which simulates a vintage look with its hidden rear shocks, make handling less intimidating than one might think. It’s a motorcycle aimed at the experienced rider seeking classic aesthetics without the mechanical drawbacks of the past. Compared to a Fat Boy of the same generation, the Heritage Classic is distinguished by its touring equipment: a large removable windscreen and studded leather saddlebags. It’s flashy, but it’s also practical.
On the road, the behavior is more restrained than one might expect from a Softail. The 41 mm fork and suspension manage imperfections correctly, without being magical. Braking, with its two 292 mm discs and four-piston calipers, is sufficient for this mass, but requires anticipation. You don’t ride this machine, you drive it with authority. Its announced top speed of 160 km/h is not the point; it's the ability to maintain a stable and comfortable pace on the highway or national roads that makes its argument.
The price, at over 21,000 euros, places the FLSTC Softail Heritage Classic in a segment where competition is fierce, especially against Japanese or European customs that are often more performant and lighter. But Harley is playing on a different field here: evocation, style, identity. It’s a machine for those who want to cross America in image, without sacrificing modern comfort. It’s not for beginners, nor for track riders seeking nervousness. It is for the touring rider who considers the motorcycle as a vehicle of dreams as much as of transport, and who accepts its weight and price as the ticket of entry for this particular journey.
