Overview
So, are we talking about a true American touring machine or a collector's item for lounges? The 2009 Harley-Davidson FLSTC Softail Heritage Classic poses this question as soon as you approach it. With its removable windscreen and studded leather saddlebags, it seems straight out of a movie, but beneath this iconic styling, there is a machine that has seriously evolved for its time.

At the heart of the thing is this Twin Cam 96 B, a 1584 cm3 V-twin engine that marks a turning point. Milwaukee has finally integrated a balance shaft, sacrificing part of the signature vibration for increased civility. Purists will grumble, but on the road, it’s a revolution. The torque, already colossal at 116.7 Nm at 3200 rpm, becomes more accessible and less fatiguing. The power remains modest, only 70 horsepower, but it's the deep rumble and constant propulsion that make the journey, not the top speed of 160 km/h. Compared to the previous Twin Cam 88, it’s a step forward in every respect.
Where does this Heritage Classic truly find its place? On the road, long and straight. The Softail frame, with its hidden rear shocks, offers a clean line but a compromise in terms of suspension. The travel is limited, especially at the rear. It’s perfect for a leisurely ride on flat ground. For a winding road, it’s less ideal. The braking, with its two 292 mm discs and four-piston calipers, is correct without being sporty, sufficient for a 341 kg motorcycle fully fueled. The low seat at 648 mm and the 18.9-liter tank invite you to mount it without complex thought and to ride far.
Facing an Indian or a Moto Guzzi California of the same generation, Harley plays its nostalgia card with modernized mechanics. It doesn’t seek performance, but experience. Its price, around 21,000 euros at the time, placed the FLSTC Softail Heritage Classic in the high-end of touring motorcycles with character. It’s a motorcycle for those who want to cross landscapes, not tear them apart. It suits the rider who prioritizes style, relative comfort, and the sound of the engine over liveliness or agility. In short, it remains a Harley, but a Harley that has agreed to make a few concessions to progress in order to better serve those who really want to travel with it.
