Overview
At what point does a motorcycle cease to be a mere means of transportation and become a cultural object, a rolling statement of intent? Ask a rider of the Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Custom, and he might have trouble answering, too busy savoring the pulsations of its V-twin engine. Because that's what it's all about here: a raw sensory experience, much more than a simple compilation of technical data. Take this 2013 version, for example. Its Twin Cam 96 with a displacement of 1573 cm3 won’t impress on a spec sheet with its 76 horsepower, a power that some 600 sportbikes easily exceed. But the figures that matter are these 124.8 Nm of torque available from 3000 rpm, a visceral surge of power that presses you into the low seat at 66.8 cm. On the road, this translates to effortless overtaking without downshifting, just by opening the throttle. The mechanics are the soul of this machine, and the FXDC, as it is also designated, embodies it perfectly.

However, it’s important not to be mistaken. The Dyna Super Glide Custom is not a performance motorcycle in the modern sense. With a wet weight of 310 kg and a ground clearance of 119 mm, it doesn't like being thrown into tight corners. The braking, with its single front disc, requires anticipation, and the 49 mm fork may show signs of weakness under a sustained pace. This is the price to pay for this characteristic style, the spoked wheels, and the burly silhouette that turns heads. Harley has refined this recipe over the years, notably with the introduction of a wider rear tire in 160 on a 17-inch rim from 2006, giving a more square stance and an even more assertive look. Looking for a used Dyna Super Glide Custom, whether a 2009, 2011, or 2014 model, often reveals these evolutions that have solidified its character.
So, who is it for? Certainly not the track rider seeking lap times or the beginner intimidated by its weight and size. The FXDC is the ideal mount for the stylish globetrotter, the one who prioritizes sensation over pure speed, and for whom the journey begins the moment you turn the key and hear the throaty idle of the big V-Twin. It is the antithesis of the sanitized motorcycle. Its vibrations, although filtered by the flexible engine mounting in its dual-cradle frame, are present and part of the spectacle. Its consumption, around 5.5 L/100 km, is reasonable for the displacement, and its nearly 19-liter tank offers correct range for long excursions.
Ultimately, testing the Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide Custom always leads to the same conclusion: you either love it or hate it, but it never leaves you indifferent. At a new price that flirted with 15,000 euros, it positioned itself as one of the most stylish entry points into the world of large-displacement American motorcycles. Today, finding a used Dyna Super Glide Custom, perhaps a 2007 model with a Fat Bob tank or a well-maintained 2010, represents an opportunity to access this icon without breaking the bank. It does nothing like the others, and that’s precisely why it has forged its legend. It doesn't promise absolute performance, but a massive dose of character, and for some, that is priceless.
