Overview
Who still buys a bagger at €32,190 in 2023 when the Japanese competition offers fully-loaded GTs for ten thousand euros less? Milwaukee loyalists, of course. And the Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special FLHXS gives them a few solid arguments to justify the expense. This machine isn't just a logo on a tank. It carries a road philosophy, a relationship with the tarmac that belongs to it alone.

Beneath the Batwing fairing lives the Milwaukee Eight 1868 cc, a 45-degree V-twin producing 93 horsepower at 5,250 rpm. The figure looks modest next to the 160 hp of a BMW K 1600 GT. Except the Street Glide doesn't play that game. Its trump card reads further down the spec sheet: 157.9 Nm of torque available from just 3,250 rpm. This twin with four valves per cylinder, set at a 10.5:1 compression ratio, delivers its thrust with a smoothness that inline-fours simply cannot replicate. The balance shaft eliminates a good portion of parasitic vibrations at idle, but the engine retains that deep rumble typical of big American V-twins. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox complete a package designed to devour miles without rushing. Top speed caps out at 160 km/h; on a German autobahn, you'll be limited. On French national roads, you'll be exactly where this motorcycle excels.
The Special version sets itself apart from the standard Street Glide with a more radical aesthetic treatment. Black invades practically the entire machine: engine guard, fork tubes, handlebar, mirrors, turn signals, exhaust heat shields. The Prodigy wheels — 19-inch up front and 18-inch at the rear — reinforce the silhouette. The saddlebags hang low, partially covering the exhaust outlets and giving the whole package a very successful swooping line. The Daymaker LED headlight modernizes the front end without betraying the classic Batwing design. You also get a 6.5-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay, GPS navigation, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and connectivity with the H-D Connect app to monitor your bike remotely. For a bagger, the multimedia equipment level rivals that of a sedan.

On the chassis side, the steel double-cradle frame carries its 375 kg wet weight without apology. The 49 mm fork offers 117 mm of travel, and the rear suspension, handled by Showa emulsion shocks, provides only 54.6 mm of travel. That's not much, and rough roads will make themselves known to your back. Braking relies on 300 mm discs on both wheels with four-piston calipers, a linked system, and cornering ABS integrated into the RDRS rider assistance package. This system also includes a two-mode traction control, hill-start assist, and engine drag torque management. The seat, set at 690 mm off the ground, accommodates all rider sizes — a genuine asset for a machine of this weight. The 22.7-liter tank allows decent legs between fuel stops.

This Street Glide Special is aimed at touring riders who place style and sensation above versatility. Against an Indian Chieftain Dark Horse or a BMW R 18 B, it holds its own through its visual identity and generous torque. Its limitations are well known: considerable weight when maneuvering, rear suspension too short for long-distance comfort, steep price tag. But nobody buys this motorcycle out of reason. You choose it because the V-twin pulses beneath the seat, because the Batwing cuts through the air with a presence that full fairings will never have, and because at every stop, it tells a story that other tourers simply don't know how to tell.
