Overview
What sets a Street Glide apart from a Street Glide Special? A simple "S" added to the FLHXS code, and yet everything changes. Harley-Davidson pushed the slider toward the dark side with this 2019 model year, drowning nearly every chromed part on the bike in black. Fork tubes, handlebars, mirrors, engine covers, heat shields, tank console: nothing escapes. The result is a menacing-looking machine, planted on its 19 and 18-inch Talon wheels, with sweeping saddlebags that come down to kiss the exhaust outlets. Compared to a Road Glide Special or a similarly specced Road King, the Street Glide retains its own personality thanks to its Batwing fairing and compact silhouette. Each model in the Touring family tells a different story, and this one clearly leans toward the unapologetic bagger.

Beneath that dark costume beats the Milwaukee Eight 114, a 45-degree V-twin bored out to 1868 cc. Four valves per cylinder, dual spark ignition, revised intake and exhaust: this engine does more than just make noise. It delivers 90 horsepower at 5020 rpm and, more importantly, 162.8 Nm of torque from just 3000 rpm. It's that torque, precisely, that makes all the difference in everyday riding. Roll-on acceleration is strong, the engine pulls hard through the midrange without ever forcing the rider to work the six-speed gearbox. Compared to the old 107 ci, the torque gain is clear. And thanks to a counter-balancer that reduces vibrations by 75% at idle, Harley managed to civilize the beast without stripping away its character. The V-twin still rumbles with that unmistakable uneven firing order, but it no longer numbs your hands after two hours on the road.
On the chassis side, the Special swapped the old pneumatic rear suspension for Showa emulsion shocks. Preload adjustment is more accessible and the response more consistent, which is immediately noticeable on rough roads. The 49 mm fork benefits from SDBV technology for better compression and rebound control. At 379 kg wet and with a seat height of 690 mm, we're obviously not talking about a nimble machine. But that's precisely the bagger's calling: devouring miles with authority, not stringing together tight corners. The braking system, entrusted to three 300 mm discs clamped by four-piston calipers and linked through the Reflex system, proves reassuring despite the considerable mass.

The cockpit deserves a closer look. The 6.5-inch touchscreen houses the Boom Box GTS system, Apple CarPlay compatible, with built-in GPS, Bluetooth, voice recognition, and USB connectivity. Startup is faster, the screen offers better contrast, and navigation is smooth. For a touring motorcycle, it's a real asset on long trips. Cruise control, fairing ventilation vents, and generously sized saddlebags round out an equipment package designed for the road. Compared to a Gold Wing, the approach is radically different: less pure technology, more raw character.

At 28,490 euros, the 2019 Street Glide Special FLHXS doesn't do things by halves when it comes to pricing. It's the cost of a certain art of travel, reserved for riders who want to combine bold style with grand touring capability without tipping into the ostentatious luxury of an Electra Glide or a CVO. It's aimed at road warriors who like to ride while imposing their presence, not at beginners or sportbike enthusiasts. Its 22.7-liter tank provides decent range, even if the top speed of 160 km/h is a reminder that its primary calling isn't the German autobahn. This Harley is a conviction purchase. You buy it as much for what it represents as for what it does.
