Overview

One hundred and twenty-five years. While brands were born and died by the dozens, while industrial giants collapsed or reinvented themselves, Royal Enfield continued to turn engines in Worcestershire, then in Redditch, and since then from Chennai. This longevity, rare in a sector as brutal as motorcycling, deserves to be celebrated beyond a sticker on the fairing.

Enfield 650 Classic 125 Year Special Edition

To mark the anniversary, the Indian manufacturer has released the Classic 650 Special Edition in a paint scheme called "Hypershift," a chameleon paint that shifts between deep red and gold depending on the angle and light. The effect is hard to ignore, sometimes hard to assume. A black stripe divides the paint scheme down the middle, a gold badge sits on the 14.8-liter tank, stickers celebrate the 125 years on the side panels, and the solo seat features neat stitching. The engine, the exhaust pipes, and all the chrome parts are treated in matte black, which contrasts with the general iridescence and gives depth to the whole. The result is flamboyant, even baroque. Royal Enfield embraces the demonstration, and one cannot blame them for being timid.

Under the anniversary bodywork, the mechanics are identical to those of the standard Classic 650. The 270-degree parallel twin, air-cooled, delivers 47 horsepower at 7,250 rpm and 52.3 Nm of torque at 5,650 rpm. This is not a technical specification to scare a Kawasaki Z650 or a Honda CB650R, machines that turn around 67 horsepower. Here, the ambition is different. The six-speed gearbox, chain transmission, steel double cradle frame, and 243 kilograms all full compose a profile geared towards leisurely riding rather than attacking passes. The 800-millimeter seat remains accessible for most builds, and the conventional suspensions, 43mm telescopic fork at the front with 120mm of travel, twin rear shock absorbers with 90mm, do the job without seeking to redefine the genre.

The target audience is clearly identified: the rider who wants a motorcycle that looks good in their garage, is pleasant to drive on weekends on national roads, and does not need 100 horsepower to feel alive. The Classic 650 is not a motorcycle for those who count the seconds on the stopwatch. It is for those who count the kilometers under the sun, visor of the helmet open, taking the time to watch the landscape pass. In this game, Royal Enfield has been consistent with itself for decades, while Triumph or Harley-Davidson have had to reinvent themselves several times to survive.

The displayed price is 7,200 euros. For a commemorative edition with differentiated finishing, it is positioned within the standard of the accessible retro segment. Royal Enfield has not confirmed whether this version will be distributed in France, nor whether production will be limited. This commercial vagueness is either a strategy to create scarcity, or an incomplete communication at the time of the announcement. Interested enthusiasts would do well to monitor dealerships closely, as special editions of this brand tend to disappear quickly among collectors as well as daily users.
