Overview
When Ducati decides to produce a road-homologated Superbike, the result resembles nothing reasonable. The 2008 Ducati 1098 R is the most violent demonstration of this: 180 horsepower, 165 kilograms dry weight, an 1198 cm3 L-twin that roars at 9750 rpm. This displacement figure surprises those who expected to find a 1098 under the magnesium valve covers. Bologna simply took advantage of the new Superbike regulations to bore it out an additional 2 mm and lengthen the stroke to 67.9 mm. A regulatory workaround that radically transforms the equation.

This Testastretta Evoluzione is not a marginally reworked engine. The 130-gram lighter pistons compared to the standard version, the 44.3 mm titanium intake valves, the carbon fiber components scattered around the periphery: everything converges towards a single objective, to shave weight without sacrificing an ounce of robustness. The final balance sheet shows 3.5 kilograms saved on the twin compared to the standard 1098. Compared to the V-twin of the 999 R, that’s 6.5 kg less. For an engine that shares its internal components with the 1098 F08 entered in the World SBK championship, it’s consistent. Ducati isn't selling an improved version of its production sportbike; it's marketing a race machine with license plates.
The suspensions follow the same logic. The 43 mm inverted Öhlins fork debates over 120 mm, the TTXr monoshock at the rear directly benefits from development derived from MotoGP. Radial-mount Brembo monoblock calipers bite down on 330 mm discs at the front. On a Honda CBR1000RR or a Yamaha R1 of the same era, one would find serious equipment; on the Ducati 1098 R, one finds the next level, the one used by paid riders. The Ducati Data Analyser, a data acquisition system coupled with PC software, completes the package for those who want to dissect their lap times like a track engineer.
The power-to-weight ratio achieved, approximately one horsepower for 0.9 kilograms, placed the 1098 R at the level of the official 996 RS with which Carl Fogarty secured the world title in 1999. This perspective says everything about the degree of commitment demanded of the rider. The Ducati 1098 R is not for the Sunday rider looking for manageable sensations. It assumes a real mastery of sporty riding, experience of track trajectories, and a tolerance for the frank reactions of a twin with a compression ratio of 12.8:1. The 820 mm seat height and featherweight construction make the machine physically accessible, but the available power demands constant respect.
The question everyone asks remains: what is the price of a Ducati 1098 R? New in 2008, it was priced around 35,000 euros, a tariff that immediately excluded a good portion of the market and embraced this elitist positioning. Today, a used Ducati 1098 R is negotiated according to condition, mileage, and any track modifications, between approximately 15,000 and 25,000 euros. A 2009 Ducati 1098 R sometimes benefits from slightly improved finishes and can still be found on the used market at comparable prices. For this budget, one obtains a machine that hasn't aged technically, even if current electronic aids are absent. This lack of electronic net is precisely what makes it so demanding and, for those who master it, so rewarding.
