Overview

When Daelim arrived on the European 125 market, few people bet on the Korean brand. Too unknown, too distant, too foreign to the codes of the sector. The VT Evolution was one of the machines that changed the game, establishing itself in the custom category accessible with an A1 license with a serious and well-crafted proposition.

What immediately strikes you is the size. Perched on its wheels with wide profiles – 90/90-18 at the front, 130/90-15 at the rear – the machine plays in a league above its displacement. The low American-style handlebar, the neat chrome accents, and the streamlined silhouette give it a presence that some competing 125s struggle to display. For a young rider who wants to ride without complexes, this is a significant argument. The weight, 153 kg dry, remains manageable in the city, even if it is far from the lightness of a naked roadster of the same displacement like a Kymco or a Sym.

Under the 12.2-liter tank is a 4-stroke, 4-valve single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 124 cc, developed in partnership with Honda. This is not insignificant. The Honda mechanical base brings recognized reliability in a segment where inexpensive engines sometimes wreak havoc. The 13 horsepower peak at 9000 rpm, the torque of 11.8 Nm arriving at 7000 rpm, and the 5-speed gearbox work cleanly. In practice, the VT Evolution claims a top speed of 110 km/h, which places it among the best-equipped 125 customs on highways or national roads. The acceleration is correct for the category, without being fierce, which is perfectly suited to daily use or small weekend rides.

The standard equipment deserves to be noted. Fuel gauge, center stand, tubeless rims, and backup kick: the VT Evolution does not cut corners on practical details, where some manufacturers waive them to compress costs. The finish holds up, the chrome accents resist well over time, and the overall impression is one of solidity consistent with the positioning. At 3178 euros in 2004, the proposition was difficult to contest against competitors often more expensive for a lower level of equipment.

The VT Evolution clearly targets the A1 license holder who wants a machine with visual character without sacrificing reliability or emptying their bank account. It will not seduce the track rider or the enthusiast of winding roads, because the classic suspensions — a 100 mm stroke telescopic fork, two 90 mm rear shock absorbers — remain conventional and limit engagement in tight curves. But for covering kilometers with style and tranquility, this Korean had solid arguments. The arrival of the Daystar in the Daelim range created internal competition, but the two machines play slightly different parts. The VT Evolution retains its place as a well-executed 125 custom, at a time when Daelim was still learning to exist on the old continent.
