Overview

When Daelim arrived on the European 125 market, few people bet on this Korean manufacturer sandwiched between Japanese giants and Italian customs. The VT Evolution changed the game, modestly, without fanfare, by doing exactly what was asked of it: looking like a real motorcycle.

Daelim VT Evolution

That's where its main argument lies. With its 153 kg dry weight, its wide 90/90-18 tires at the front and 130/90-15 at the rear, its lowered handlebars in a low rider style, and its generous chrome plating, the VT Evolution visually cheats with remarkable effectiveness. It borrows the codes of large American customs, and the result is convincing enough to forget the actual displacement. For a young A1 license holder who doesn't want to ride something that looks like a toy, it's a difficult-to-avoid selling point.

Under the bodywork, the mechanics bear a fine calling card. The 124 cc single-cylinder engine, developed in collaboration with Honda, turns with four valves per cylinder and delivers 13 horsepower at 9000 rpm, with a torque of 11.80 Nm available from 7000 rpm. These figures place the Daelim in the leading group of the 125 custom category, and on the road, that's felt. The rev range is frank, the restarts honest, and the five-speed gearbox well-spaced. The announced top speed of 110 km/h is accessible, which is enough not to be swept away on a highway. Faced with a Honda CB125, the Korean is not embarrassed, and it costs noticeably less.

The standard equipment also deserves attention. Fuel gauge, center stand, tubeless tire compatible rims, backup kick: Daelim took care of the list of equipment at a time when some competitors delivered their machines with total stripping. The 12.2-liter tank offers correct autonomy, and the steel double cradle frame provides reassuring rigidity, not surprising for a novice driver. The suspensions, with 100 mm of travel at the front and 90 mm at the rear, do their job without particular genius, which is exactly what is expected on a machine of this category.

The downside comes from within the Daelim catalog itself. The arrival of the Daystar has created a direct competitor to the VT Evolution, more recent, with a redesigned silhouette. The VT Evolution must now justify its existence against its own family, which is never comfortable. Its positioning at 3178 euros holds up against external competition, but internal pressure forces Daelim to clarify what still distinguishes the two models. For the buyer, this is good news: the equipment-price ratio of the VT Evolution is somehow reinforced by this fraternal competition.

Ultimately, this machine clearly addresses the beginner who wants to settle into a real biker posture without looking like an apprentice. It keeps its mechanical promises, displays careful finishing for its price, and carries high the image of a brand that has built its reputation on solid foundations. Daelim was unknown ten years ago on the old continent; the VT Evolution is part of the reasons why that is no longer the case.
