Overview
What drove BMW, in the early 2000s, to revisit a roadster that was already working perfectly well? The 2002 BMW R 1150 R provides its answer with a flat-twin bored out to 1130 cc, a 6-speed gearbox finally worthy of the name, and a braking system overhauled from top to bottom. On paper, the BMW R 1150 R's spec sheet speaks for itself: 85 hp at 6750 rpm, 98 Nm of torque from just 5750 rpm, and a wet weight of 238 kg — reasonable for a roadster of this size. Not enough to scare a Ducati Monster 1000 in outright performance, but that's not the point.

The four-valve-per-cylinder boxer twin, with its generous 101 mm bore and short 70 mm stroke, delivers its power with a smoothness that Italian twins can only envy. The engine pulls long, round, and free of surging. The comfort zone lies in the mid-range, where torque pushes firmly without ever unsettling the rider. The shaft drive, a Munich trademark, comes with its own quirks: a slight torque reaction under acceleration, a jolt on downshifts that takes some getting used to. Nothing deal-breaking, but a beginner coming from the Japanese world will need a few hundred kilometers to find their bearings. The six-speed gearbox, already proven on the R 1150 GS, shifts with precision. It's a genuine improvement over the old five-speed.
On the chassis side, the BMW R 1150 R relies on the Telelever front and Paralever rear duo — two suspension systems that remarkably filter out road imperfections while keeping the attitude stable under braking. The hybrid cast-aluminum and steel frame, the 1473 mm wheelbase, and the 120/70 and 170/60 tires on 17-inch rims give the machine reassuring highway stability and decent maneuverability in the city. It's no supermoto, but for a machine tipping the scales at nearly 240 kg, the BMW R 1150 R threads through traffic with surprising agility. The EVO braking system with dual front discs and a single rear disc gets the job done cleanly. The optional full integral ABS, highly recommended, does however require an adjustment period: its "intelligent" operation can throw off riders who aren't used to it.
The overall design stays true to the BMW spirit: understated, almost plush, with that gentleman rider look that appeals to forty- and fifty-something touring enthusiasts. The 20-liter tank provides comfortable range for weekend rides. The 800 mm seat height accommodates most body types without difficulty. Today, used BMW R 1150 R models go for very reasonable prices, making them an attractive entry point into the Bavarian flat-twin world. You'll also come across Rockster versions, sportier-looking and rarer, along with a few café racer builds or scrambler kit conversions that breathe new life into the platform. A test ride on the BMW R 1150 R is usually all it takes to convince. Panniers mount easily for long-distance trips, and the workshop manual in French is readily available for those who like to get their hands dirty. As for fuel, regular 95 unleaded suits the 10.3:1 compression ratio perfectly.
Listed at 11,500 euros new at the time, available from 2001 to 2006 depending on the market, this R 1150 R generation never tried to play the sportbike card. Its 197 km/h top speed confirms as much. Its domain is the winding road devoured at a steady pace, the mountain pass taken at a brisk but serene rhythm, the daily commute when the weather cooperates. Against a Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 or a Yamaha FZ1, it counters with a more composed temperament, solid mechanical reliability, and a riding comfort that rewards the miles. Not the most exciting in its segment, but probably one of the most endearing.
