When BMW decided to replace the R 1100 R at the turn of the 2000s, nobody expected a revolution. And that's exactly what Munich didn't deliver. The 2001 BMW R 1150 R takes the recipe of the bourgeois flat-twin roadster and raises every ingredient a notch. The boxer grows from 1085 to 1130 cc, the gearbox gains a sixth ratio, and the braking system evolves. On paper, it's an update. On the road, it's a motorcycle that asserts its character with more confidence than its predecessor.

On the spec sheet, the BMW R 1150 R produces 85 hp at 6750 rpm and, more importantly, 98 Nm of torque from just 5250 rpm. These aren't figures that would make a Ducati Monster S4 or a Triumph Speed Triple of the same era tremble, but the flat-twin doesn't play in that league. Its strength lies in tractability. The engine pulls with a smoothness that only a boxer can deliver — no jerks, no parasitic nervousness. You ride on the throttle in the mid-range and the twin responds with metronome-like consistency. The shaft drive and dry clutch require an adjustment period, especially if you're coming from a Japanese bike. But once you've got the hang of it, the BMW R 1150 R rides with a fluidity that makes long journeys almost too easy. The 20.4-litre tank also allows a comfortable range between stops.
The chassis relies on the Telelever front and Paralever rear duo, two suspension systems that remain a BMW signature. The result is remarkable directional stability for a machine weighing 238 kg wet. The low 770 mm seat height reassures average-sized riders and makes manoeuvring at a standstill easier. The long 1487 mm wheelbase favours comfort and straight-line tracking over agility through a series of bends. Yet the R 1150 R proves more nimble than you'd expect. It turns well, places itself with precision, and the EVO braking system with its larger discs and lighter Tokico calipers offers noticeably improved bite. The optional integral ABS, if fitted, does however demand serious learning, as its operation differs significantly from a conventional anti-lock system.
Sold new for around 11,500 euros in 2001, the BMW R 1150 R can now be found on the used market at very affordable prices, often between 3,000 and 5,000 euros depending on condition and mileage. The 2002, 2003, 2004 and later versions received minor adjustments, and the Rockster variant introduced in 2003 added a more urban styling touch with its bold colour schemes. The R 1150 R Rockster can also be found second-hand for those who appreciate visual personality. Some owners push the transformation further with a cafe racer kit or a scrambler kit, proof that the mechanical base ages well and lends itself to custom projects. For routine maintenance, a BMW R 1150 R workshop manual remains a wise investment, and adding BMW R 1150 R panniers turns the roadster into a credible tourer. As for fuel, standard 95 unleaded suits the 10.3:1 compression ratio perfectly.
This BMW R 1150 R never claimed to rival the sporting roadsters of its era when it comes to raw thrills. It aimed for something else: to offer a refined, comfortable, reliable roadster capable of devouring miles without tiring its rider. Twenty-five years on, that promise still holds up. For a touring-minded rider looking for a sound, easy-going and mechanically solid machine, it remains a relevant choice on the used market. Not the most exciting, but certainly one of the most reassuring.
