Overview

BMW has always enjoyed blurring the lines. With the CE 02, the Bavarian firm isn't simply launching yet another electric two-wheeler onto the market: it's inventing a category. Neither scooter, nor motorcycle, nor souped-up e-scooter, this "eParkourer" — as they call it themselves — looks more like a concept pulled from a design show than a production machine. The angular silhouette, the exposed motor unit, the single-sided aluminium swingarm: you either love it or hate it, but you don't go unnoticed. And that is probably the primary objective.

BMW CE 02

The target audience is clearly the 16-to-25 age bracket, or urban riders who want to stand out from the parade of interchangeable scooters. The BMW CE 02 comes in two power outputs. The restricted version at 4 kW, accessible from age 14 with an AM licence, tops out at 45 km/h and weighs 119 kg. The full-power version, the one that concerns us here, delivers 11 kW — 15 horsepower — for 132 kg on the scales, placing it in the BMW CE 02 125 equivalent category. The licence question for the BMW CE 02 comes up frequently: for this 11 kW version, an A1 licence is sufficient, or a B licence with the mandatory 7-hour training course.

What truly sets this machine apart from any 125 combustion engine is the availability of torque. The BMW CE 02's power is expressed through 54.9 Nm available from 1,500 rpm. To put that figure in context, it's the same force as a well-built 650cc single-cylinder. And here, that torque arrives at the precise moment you roll the throttle — no transition, no rev build-up. Top speed reaches 120 km/h, and the BMW CE 02 range is around 90 kilometres in mixed use. Not enough to contemplate a grand tour, but more than sufficient for several days of urban commuting between charges. The low 750 mm seat height eases handling for riders of varying stature, and the single-speed belt drive guarantees virtually zero maintenance.

On the question of how to charge a BMW CE 02, the standard 900 W charger requires approximately 2h40 to go from 20 to 80%. The 1,500 W fast charger, available exclusively through the optional Highline pack, reduces this to 1h40. For a full charge, allow 3h30 in the best-case scenario. An onboard USB-C port also allows you to power your equipment on the go. The chassis remains understated: steel double-loop frame, upside-down fork, adjustable rear shock absorber, twin discs, ABS on the front wheel only. This last choice is deliberate; BMW leaves the rear wheel free for those who enjoy a slide. Two riding modes are included as standard — "Flow" for the city and "Surf" for a more spirited pace.

The BMW CE 02 price starts at €7,750, which positions the machine well above a Honda Dax 125 or a Yamaha NEO'S electric. And a third riding mode "Flash", heated grips, the fast charger, and Bluetooth connectivity only arrive with the paid Highline pack, pushing the bill toward €10,000. What the BMW CE 02 price with the full pack implies is a clientele that is buying a style object first and a mobility tool second. Added to this deliberate positioning are two omissions that draw complaints: no integrated storage, and a passenger seat so narrow it discourages any thought of comfortable two-up riding. For the rider who wants every commute to feel like something, the CE 02 delivers on its promise with a conviction that few manufacturers would have dared display so candidly.
