Overview
Is it still legitimate to talk about the Aprilia RSV Mille R, more than twenty years after its launch? Absolutely. Because this Italian isn’t just a 2000s sportbike; it’s the birth of a philosophy, that of the “Factory” before its time. At the time, offering a heavily equipped version, ready for the track but still homologated for the road, was almost bordering on insolence.

The recipe is clear: you take the beating heart of the standard RSV Mille, its 998 cc V2 roaring at 60°, and dress it in masterfully crafted parts. The Öhlins fork and shock absorber, the forged aluminum OZ rims, and the composite material tank lighten the whole and radically transform the character. With 128 horsepower at 9500 rpm and a muscular torque of 101 Nm, it’s not the most powerful of its generation, but it’s one of the most charismatic. The V2 offers a linear and sonorous surge, much more accessible and communicative than a high-revving four-cylinder. The aluminum double-beam frame and this exceptional rolling chassis offer a rare feeling of precision, where each input is a direct conversation with the asphalt.
Compared to a Honda CBR 900 RR Fireblade or a Yamaha YZF-R1 of the time, more powerful and focused on pure performance, the Mille R plays a different part. It focuses on agility, sensory feedback, and that feeling of riding a competition tool. The announced dry weight of 183 kg contributes to this fierce agility, even if the 820 mm seat height may intimidate those of a more modest build. Its price of 15,242 euros, a significant surcharge compared to the base model, is justified by the quality of the components. It was the price of excellence.
A test of the Aprilia RSV Mille R Factory reveals its true territory: the track. On the road, its firm settings, the spartan single-seater seat, and the demanding V2 riding style limit its use to the pleasure of initiates. It is a motorcycle for enthusiasts, for purists who accept compromises for pure emotion. It is clearly not made for touring or the city. For those who wanted to go further, Aprilia offered the SP version, even more radical and out of reach, but the R remained the most accomplished model to combine road use and track ambitions.
Today, the Aprilia RSV Mille R has become a collector's item, a symbol of an era when sportbikes had a strong character. It reminds us that before the race for electronics, pleasure was born from the dialogue between an engine full of soul, a precise chassis, and a fully involved rider. A myth, simply.
