Overview
When a Chinese manufacturer decides to play the scrambler card in the A1 licence category, it takes a calculated risk: the segment is crowded, aesthetic expectations are high, and the slightest stylistic misstep comes at a price. Zontes, which has already demonstrated with its nakeds that the brand knows how to deliver quality finishing, returns in 2025 with this 125 Scrambler X to convince young licence holders that adventure starts at A1.

Beneath the 20-litre tank sits a four-stroke single-cylinder producing 14.6 horsepower at 9,000 rpm — the regulatory ceiling for the category. On paper, nothing sets this engine apart from the direct competition, whether the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 in restricted form or the Kove 125. But Zontes plays an interesting card with its upside-down fork, a component not systematically found at this price point of €3,599. It's a detail that matters, because an inverted fork filters out imperfections more effectively and delivers sharper steering — especially on the gravel tracks that the scrambler profile promises to swallow up.
The kerb weight of 160 kg remains reasonable for a machine aiming to position itself between tarmac and forest trails. A novice rider with a few weeks of practice won't have to wrestle to keep it balanced at a standstill, and the 110 km/h top speed is more than adequate for riding on national roads without getting tailgated. The 6-speed gearbox is welcome news too: it provides the flexibility to pace things properly, where some 125s make do with 5 gears that are too widely spaced.
What deserves closer attention is the commercial positioning. At €3,599, Zontes takes direct aim at Benelli, Honda, and Yamaha while offering equipment that frequently surpasses what those Japanese or Italian brands are willing to fit on their entry-level models. The single front disc brake does the job, and Euro 5 compliance ensures the machine's long-term regulatory viability for years to come. What the spec sheet doesn't reveal is the quality of everyday finishing, the reliability of the chain after 10,000 kilometres, or the behaviour of the rear suspension on poor surfaces — questions that Zontes' still-sparse dealer network in France will need to answer with solid after-sales support.
The target is crystal clear: the young A1 licence holder who wants a good-looking motorcycle, capable of a short weekend forest ride without turning Monday morning into a Paris-Dakar rally. For this audience, the Zontes 125 Scrambler X ticks the right boxes at an honest price. It doesn't reinvent the scrambler — it democratises it.
