Overview

Sixty candles deserve a celebration. And at Yamaha, they don’t do things by halves. As the legendary “Speedblock” colors reappeared on the cross bikes, the firm with the tuning forks chose the sacred stage of the Bol d’Or 2015 to launch its bombshell. On the tarmac of Castellet, it wasn’t only the R1s of GMT94 and YART that sported the iconic yellow and black, it was a manifesto. And the best part is that for 2016, Yamaha decided to make everyone benefit from it.

Yamaha YZF-R1 1000 60eme anniversaire

This 60th Anniversary R1 is much more than a sticker. It’s the reincarnation of the Kenny Roberts spirit, injected into the most accomplished hypersport machine of its time. Under its bodywork that screams of the track, you find the 200 horsepower beast born in 2015, a electronic monster tamed by an arsenal of riding aids. The perimeter aluminum frame, the 43 mm inverted fork, everything is geared towards a single goal: pure performance. With 199 kg fully fueled, it displays an aggressiveness that the original Akrapovic silencer alone cannot soften.

Compared to the 2009 generation, it’s a quantum leap. But the real debate, for purists, may lie in the emotion. The 2006 R1, with its 5-valve engine and more raw character, had a different soul. Here, everything is precise, calculated, terribly efficient. The power is linear, violent, and the 112.8 Nm of torque slams you against the tank as soon as the rev counter exceeds 10,000 rpm. It’s a cold war machine, where the rider's instinct is augmented by electronics.

Who is it for? Certainly not a novice. This €19,999 missile is the ultimate weapon of the experienced track rider or the demanding hypersport rider who wants the best, without compromise. On the road, its character is demanding, its riding position radical, and its 17-liter tank reminds you that pleasures are intense, but fleeting. It’s a motorcycle that looks at you and asks: are you up to it?

So, more beautiful than the previous one? The question is almost secondary. Yamaha hasn’t simply released a limited color scheme. It has encapsulated sixty years of racing in a motorcycle that is already part of the future. It’s not perfect, it’s intimidating, expensive, and absolutely transcendent when you dare to speak its language. A tribute that ultimately honors the past as much as it defies the future.
