Overview

One sometimes wonders if a motorcycle is made to be ridden or collected. With this R1 20th Anniversary Swiss Edition, Yamaha superbly blurs the lines. Released in 2018 to celebrate two decades of legend, it was produced in only twenty copies, a number that speaks volumes about its status as a coveted object rather than a simple track tool. The Swiss importer played the nostalgia card with a white and red livery that is a perfect copy of the original R1 from 1998. Everything is there, down to the calligraphy of the logos and the two-tone seat. It’s a masterpiece, a visual tribute that immediately resonates with any enthusiast.

But beneath this commemorative finish still beats the wild heart of a modern superbike. The 998 cm³ CP4 engine has not been reworked for the occasion, and that’s a very good thing. It delivers its 201 horsepower at 13,500 rpm with the rage and linearity that characterize it, while the torque of 113.8 Nm arrives higher in the rev range, requiring you to keep the engine simmering. The only real mechanical gift is a titanium Akrapovic exhaust, which mainly serves to sublimate the symphony of the inline-four and lighten the balance a bit. Because with its 199 kg fully fueled, the R1 is not a feather, even if its perimeter aluminum frame offers phenomenal agility.

On paper, at €21,165, it faces equally fierce competitors, such as the BMW S 1000 RR or the Ducati Panigale V4. But comparing would be dishonest here. This edition is not purchased for a hundredth of a second per lap or more refined electronics. It is purchased for the history, for the thrill of owning one of the twenty copies. The typical buyer is an informed collector or a brand enthusiast with the means to afford a piece of heritage. The promise of a session at the Yamaha Riding Academy on the Slovakiaring is the icing on the cake, a unique experience to tease the beast in its natural environment.

Ultimately, this Swiss R1 is a total success in its role. It does not claim to revolutionize the category, it celebrates its own myth. It is a motorcycle to look at, to exhibit, and to take out for rare rides where you savor as much the looks of passersby as the sensations. A pure emotional object, which recalls that sometimes, the soul of a machine counts as much as its raw performance.
