Overview

When you put your foot on the footrest of a YZ 85, you’re already well on your way from the PW. Lightweight, agile, fast, and reliable, this is a minimalist version of Yamaha’s formidable racing machines. Equipped with the essential engine and chassis technologies benefiting the YZ 125 and YZ 250, the YZ 85 presents itself as an excellent machine to prepare for a future professional racing career. With a compact bodywork, a flatter seat, and a series of chassis modifications, the changes brought to this generation of YZ 85 reflect those of the YZ 125 – and like its big sister, the machine is designed to offer a more assertive, more efficient, and more athletic behavior to riders aiming for the VictoryZone.

Innovative and Dynamic Design

The style resembles that of the higher displacement YZ models. The compact bodywork features a powerful horizontal line that, along with a flat seat and redesigned side panels, provides a more secure and aggressive riding position. The bicolor scheme presents contrasting areas of Icon Blue and dark matte blue, while the graphics resist harsh conditions, allowing this high-tech race bike to maintain its appearance throughout the season.

Bodywork

Since 2022, the YZ 85 has been equipped with narrower bodywork that offers the rider greater freedom of movement for better control during acceleration, braking, and cornering. The redesigned radiator guards are 25mm narrower at their widest point and now feature a uniform left-right configuration that contributes to greater bike balance from the rider’s perspective.

The YZ 85 also features a front fender whose upper portion promotes airflow to the radiator for efficient cooling and consistently high engine performance. Inherited from the YZ 125, this compact bodywork proves the common DNA of the YZ models.

Flatter Seat and Redesigned Tank

Like the YZ 125, the YZ 85 is equipped with a flatter seat that allows the rider to move more easily. Ergonomics are further improved by the 5-liter tank featuring a redesigned cap that offers greater freedom of movement forward. The seat is fitted with a new single-bolt fixing that facilitates and speeds up maintenance.

Rear-Mounted High-Efficiency Air Intake

The side panels of the YZ 85 fulfill two important roles: First, their smooth and narrow design promotes rider maneuverability for quick transitions between front and rear. Second, they feature rear vents that allow more direct airflow to the engine airbox, thus providing greater intake efficiency for high performance.

More Progressive Rear Brake Performance

For more progressive rear braking, the YZ 85 features a master cylinder with an integrated reservoir. This solution replaces the separate reservoir and connecting hose of the previous model to provide more natural and linear braking and generate precise feedback.

Lightweight Aluminum Rear Frame and New Swingarm

Since 2022, the chassis of the YZ 85 benefits from a 570gr lighter aluminum rear frame than the steel unit used on the previous model, a significant weight reduction that also contributes to mass centralization.

Another novelty, the swingarm has been redesigned and features a new balance between its longitudinal stiffness and its torsional stiffness. This subtle but significant change improves chassis stability and allows power to be transmitted to the ground more effectively.
