Overview
You see it still in the starting grids of young champions, this famous Yamaha YZ85. It’s no longer just a motorcycle; it’s a rite of passage. For a young rider, moving from an initiation machine to this 85cc two-stroke is leaving the world of leisure to enter the anteroom of competition. With its 73 kg wet weight and 29 horsepower delivered by a YPVS valve cylinder, it's nothing like a toy. It is the ultimate training tool, the one that teaches you to manage explosive power and to tame a racing chassis.

The philosophy is clear: everything is taken from the big sister YZ125. The double cradle frame, the fully adjustable KYB suspension, the Wave disc brakes, everything is there to instill the right sensations. Weight has been chased everywhere, with an aluminum rear frame that saves over half a kilogram, a mass centralization crucial for the feeling. The swingarm has been reworked for better balance between rigidity and flexibility, to put the power down without betraying the rider. It's an honest machine, which responds immediately and precisely.
The ergonomics have been painstakingly refined for these growing riders. The narrower bodywork between the legs, the flat seat and the 5-liter fuel tank with a redesigned cap, everything is done to facilitate body movements. You can feel that Yamaha listened to young people who want to dive onto the tank on corner entry or move back to balance the rear wheel. Even the rear brake, with its integrated reservoir master cylinder, offers progressiveness that was sometimes lacking in older models, a detail that makes all the difference for a novice rider learning to modulate their braking.
So, who is it for? Clearly for adolescents aged 12 to 16 who have surpassed the beginner stage and are aiming for motocross podiums. It's the perfect mount to approach young competition. Its price, around 5,600 euros, places it in the top of the 85cc range, but it's the price of access to cutting-edge technology and legendary reliability. It should be known that the Yamaha YZ85 is not homologated for road use; it was born for the track, end of story. For those who want to go further, there are even GYTR kits and carbon editions, but that's another story, and above all another budget.
Ultimately, this YZ85 doesn't really have a direct competitor; it crushes the competition 85cc market. It imposes its know-how, its finish and its pedigree. It's not a motorcycle for riding around the field; it's a serious, almost professional springboard. It demands respect, technique and maintenance, but in return, it trains riders. It is the first solid step on a podium that, for some, could well be that of a Grand Prix in a few years.
