Overview

Can a motorcycle be a symbol in its own right? Pronounce "Ténéré" to a somewhat dreamy motorcyclist, and you’ll see their gaze drift towards distant horizons, between ergs and regs. This legend, forged in the sands of the Dakar, had almost disappeared from catalogs, stifled by the fashion for roadsters and sanitized trails. So, bringing back the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere in 2008 was a gamble. A bet on nostalgia and the call of adventure, at a time when everything seemed to revolve around asphalt. Today, searching for a used Yamaha XT660Z Tenere often means tracking down more than just a simple machine: a passport to escape.

Yamaha XT660Z Tenere

Beneath its appearance of a serious adventurer, the beast hides a simple, almost archaic heart. Its 660cc single-cylinder engine is the definition of old-school robustness. With 48 horsepower and 58 Nm of torque, we are far from a rocket. The power is linear, the engine vibrates noticeably above 4000 rpm, and the 5-speed gearbox recalls that we are on a utility platform. But that's precisely what makes its charm and legendary reliability. It devours the kilometer without fuss, its 23-liter tank offering a hiker's range, and its maintenance remains within everyone's reach. Faced with a BMW F650GS of the time, more refined and road-oriented, or a KTM 690 Enduro, much more powerful and demanding, the Tenere positions itself as an accessible travel machine, a mule that won't let you down.

However, once in the saddle, doubt can creep in. With its 208 kilograms fully fueled and a seat height of 89.6 cm, it intimidates. In town or on a narrow road, it’s not a fairy. The weight is felt, and the 26 cm ground clearance is sometimes challenged by the somewhat low sills. It is clearly not a pure enduro. On the other hand, as soon as the space opens up on gravel roads or winding mountain roads, it reveals its true talent. Its long-travel suspension absorbs shocks with a comforting nonchalance, and its wide handlebars offer precise control. It is a motorcycle for traveling far, on roads where asphalt gives way to gravel, not for playing at trials.

So, who is it for? Certainly not for the track racer seeking thrills or the complete beginner frightened by its size. It targets the adventurous globetrotter with a reasonable budget, the one who wants to be able to leave the national highway without breaking the bank or fearing a breakdown. Its new price at the time, around 7300 euros, already made it a serious option compared to the competition. Today, on the used market, it represents a safe bet, a solid entry ticket into the world of raids without complications.

The Yamaha XT660Z Tenere has never been the fastest, lightest, or most technical. But it has that indefinable something: character. It whispers stories of the desert to you even when you’re riding to the office. It is a bulwark against the overly smooth, a reminder that adventure often begins where asphalt ends. A myth made accessible, simply.
