Overview
Who among us still has a map of Africa on the wall, with that red line traversing the continent from north to south? The name Ténéré is a fragrance. A fragrance of dust, sun-baked pebbles, and immense silences. Yamaha, with its XT660Z Ténéré, doesn't just manufacture a motorcycle. It revives a legend, that of riders who defied the desert on rudimentary machines. And in 2009, it launches this version, a nod to those who still dream of limitless horizons.

Technically, it’s a solid machine. A 660 cm3 single-cylinder engine delivering 48 horsepower and 58 Nm of torque, figures that speak of robustness rather than madness. The engine is a regular on rough trails, it knows how to work without fuss. But with 206 kg when fully fueled and a seat height of 895 mm, it’s not a lightweight motorcycle. It asserts its stature. The 23-liter fuel tank, however, is a significant argument: it promises stress-free stages of 400 kilometers. It’s a machine made for travel, not for acrobatics.
Facing its competitors, such as the BMW F650GS or the KTM 690 Enduro, the Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré plays a different role. It’s not the most responsive, nor the most agile in technical terrain. Its weight and 260 mm ground clearance give it a regal presence on stabilized tracks and mountain roads, but it’s not a rock climber. It’s the long-distance traveler of adventure, the one who prefers the long, straight lines of the desert to the tight turns of forest trails. For a beginner in trail riding, it can be intimidating. For a traveler looking for a safe and economical companion, it becomes a very serious option, especially today on the used market.
Its look is a tribute. The double square headlights, the protective fairing, the gaiters on the telescopic forks, all directly evoke the rally machines of the 1980s. Yamaha has managed to dress this steel tube chassis with a range of features that immediately make you want to add panniers and a skid plate. It’s a motorcycle that prepares for departure, even if that departure ends at the local campsite. At 7399 euros at the time, it positioned itself as a credible alternative to the roadsters that dominated the market.
Ultimately, this Ténéré is a cultural object more than a pure performance machine. It doesn’t run at 180 km/h for the pleasure of speed, it reaches it to complete a stage. It’s not the most versatile, but it’s one of the most evocative. For those who want a simple, solid motorcycle steeped in history, the used XT660Z Ténéré remains an excellent choice. It may not transport you to Timbuktu, but it will make you feel a little desert wind on your face on the way to work. And sometimes, that’s what true freedom is.
