Overview
What if a scooter could give you the feeling of riding a motorcycle? That’s the bold, and rather successful, bet that Yamaha is making with this 2023 XMAX 125. Far from a basic utilitarian image, it arrives with a distinctive look, an imposing fairing that gives it a rare presence in the category, and equipment that borders on outrageous for a 125. At €5499, the price of the new Yamaha XMAX 125 is striking, that’s a fact. But you’re buying more than just a vehicle here: it’s a premium mobility experience that clearly targets demanding urban riders or novices refusing to make compromises.

Beneath the sharply cut plastic lies a restrained and efficient 4-stroke single-cylinder engine. With 12.2 horsepower, it effortlessly reaches the regulatory limit, and the torque of 11.2 Nm available low in the rev range ensures brisk acceleration in the city. The real magic happens in its behavior. Its underbone frame and wheelbase of 1570 mm give it the stability of a touring machine, devouring boulevards and national roads with a surprising aplomb for a scooter. The announced consumption, around 2.3L/100km, is a significant argument for daily use. Faced with competitors like the Honda Forza 125 or the Sym Citycom 300i, the XMAX 125 plays the refinement and maxi-scooter look card, even at the expense of sacrificing some pure agility in exchange for this road comfort.
Where the Yamaha XMAX 125 really crushes the competition is in its interior. The seat height of 800 mm is accessible, and once in place, you discover a dashboard worthy of a GT, notably with smartphone connectivity. The under-seat storage compartment is gargantuan, capable of swallowing two full-face helmets, and the small 13.2-liter tank is forgotten thanks to the engine’s excellent fuel efficiency. It is a scooter designed for long and loaded journeys, where the comfortable backrest and vast storage spaces make all the difference. For those who want to push personalization, Yamaha XMAX 125 parts and accessories, from phone holders to stickers, are not lacking.
There is, however, a but, almost inevitable. This weight of 167 kg fully fueled, combined with a ground clearance of 140 mm, can make it a little cumbersome in ultra-tight maneuvers or on sloped spaces. It’s not the quickest scooter in the parking lot, it’s an assumed choice. For whom? For those seeking the definitive two-wheeled vehicle for the city and its suburbs, with a touch of touring. For the young license holder proud to be riding a machine with superior looks and finish. For the former motorcyclist seeking a practical vehicle without sacrificing the pleasure of riding. As for the famous list of fault codes for the Yamaha XMAX 125, it remains the domain of mechanics, as the reliability of this proven engine is excellent. In summary, it’s not the cheapest, and its top speed will be restricted, but it offers such a coherent and quality package that it justifies its entry price. A used Yamaha XMAX 125 in good condition can also be a masterstroke for those who want to access this platform without breaking the bank. A machine that, ultimately, makes the city a little bigger and each journey, a little more enjoyable.
