Overview
Can a production motorcycle still give you the feeling of riding a factory prototype? With the Yamaha R1M, the question is seriously raised. It's not simply an R1 with extra stickers; it's the ultimate weapon that Yamaha designs for those for whom the stopwatch is the only truth. At nearly €26,000, its price sets the bar very high, but it's the ticket to a world where carbon fiber and conversational electronics reign supreme.

Under its jet-black fairing, it shares with the standard R1 its beating heart: the mythical 998 cm3 inline crossplane four-cylinder engine. You have to love its sharp character, this way of delivering its 200 free horsepower and 113.3 Nm of torque with a frankness that tolerates no softness. The 2021 version, like the 2022 and 2023 model years that followed, has managed to preserve this soul while adapting to anti-pollution standards. It consumes a 17-liter tank with relative frugality, around 7.2 L/100 km, but let's be clear, no one buys this machine to refuel less often.
The real difference, the real added cost, is justified by the chassis and dedicated tools. The Öhlins semi-active fork and shock are from another planet. The ERS NPX system, with its pressurized fork, eliminates cavitation and offers a frighteningly consistent setting, whether you leave it in automatic or adjust it manually via the dashboard. This setting comfort comes at a price, a kilo more on the scale, bringing the wet weight to 202 kg. A negligible penalty compared to the benefit in agility and feel.
Where the Yamaha R1M 2021, and by extension the 2022 to 2024 models, assert their status is with their dedicated electronic arsenal. The YRC Setting application allows you to sculpt custom riding modes, as an engineer would for their rider. Y-TRAC, for its part, is an onboard track coach that records and analyzes every data point, from lean angle to the effectiveness of the aids. Compared to a Ducati Panigale V4, the R1M relies less on brute demonstration and more on surgical precision and extreme personalization. It is a machine for the analyst, the perfectionist.
So, who is it for? Certainly not a beginner, nor even a Sunday rider. The 860 mm seat height, the committed riding position, and the sharp character make it a pure track tool, even if it remains homologated. It is the motorcycle for the demanding rider who wants the quintessence of the limited series, with the small numbered badge on the airbox to remind him. Looking for a used Yamaha R1M, perhaps a 2019 or a 2020, may be a good compromise to access this experience without the shock of the new price. But in any case, it demands a total commitment. It doesn't flatter, it educates. And for some, that's worth all the sacrifices.
