Overview
Who would have thought a small 125 could carry so much history on its fairings? Yamaha is celebrating 70 years and has decided to dress its youngest sibling, the R 125, in the most meaningful livery in the entire R range. The white, the red, the Speedblock graphics: it's impossible not to think of the legendary YZF-R7 OW-02, the one that terrorized Superbike grids in the late 90s. Twenty-five years later, that livery still hits just as hard. And this is precisely where Yamaha plays a clever hand: slapping this legendary scheme on the entry-level model plants a seed of brand loyalty in the young A1 license holder discovering the tuning-fork brand for the first time.

Let's be clear, beneath the paint, nothing changes compared to the standard R 125. The 124.7 cc single-cylinder four-stroke with variable valve timing puts out 15 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 11.4 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. You're not going to set the world on fire with those numbers, but the little engine is willing and benefits from a steel Deltabox frame that gives it unexpected rigidity for this displacement class. The 141 kg wet weight remains contained, the 825 mm seat height plants the rider in a sporty position without being punishing, and the 11-liter tank allows decent range before needing to stop. Top speed maxes out at 125 km/h, par for the category, but it's in the corners where the machine truly comes alive.
What's surprising is the level of equipment. Yamaha doesn't cut corners: the 41 mm KYB inverted fork with 130 mm of travel, the 292 mm front brake disc with radial-mount caliper, the 5-inch color TFT display, the machined triple clamp that mimics MotoGP machinery. You'd almost think you were on a little track toy. The standard-fit traction control raises more eyebrows. On 15 horsepower, its usefulness is debatable, but it has the merit of educating beginners on the electronic aids they'll encounter on more powerful machines. The quickshifter remains an option, which seems more reasonable.

Against the competition, the Yamaha R 125 70th Anniversary plays in the same league as the KTM RC 125 and Aprilia RS 125, two rivals with serious sporting credentials. The KTM banks on a radical chassis and Moto3 looks, the Aprilia on its Italian racing DNA. The Yamaha bets on emotion and heritage. At 6,299 euros, it sits at the top end for a sporty 125. The premium over the standard version is justified solely by the livery, since the mechanicals and equipment are identical. It's a choice made with the heart, not the head.

This anniversary R 125 is aimed at the beginner who wants more than just a tool to earn their license. It's a gateway into Yamaha's sportbike universe, a first encounter with the visual codes that also adorn the R3, R7, R9, and R1. The same livery graced the factory M1s in MotoGP and the machines entered at the Suzuka 8 Hours in 2025. Wearing these colors on a 125 is a little presumptuous, a little endearing, and ultimately very effective at forging a bond with the brand. Yamaha is selling an accessible dream, and on that front, the formula works.
