Overview
What sets a premium scooter apart from a simple urban commuter? Sometimes, it's all in the details. And Yamaha clearly understands this with the NMAX 125 Tech MAX 2025, the top-tier version of its best-selling city runabout. Built on the same mechanical platform as the standard NMAX, the tuning fork brand piles on the equipment to justify a more ambitious price point. The result is a little 125 with GT pretensions, featuring a connected TFT display, Garmin compatibility for navigation, a redesigned seat, and colorways exclusive to this variant. At €3,799, the entry price climbs noticeably compared to the standard version, and the question deserves to be asked: is the extra comfort and technology worth the expense?

On the mechanical side, we're on familiar ground. The four-stroke single-cylinder 125 cc engine, Euro 5+ compliant, puts out 12.24 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 11.2 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. Nothing earth-shattering on paper, but that's the reality of 125s restricted by regulation. This powerplant, with its 52 mm bore, 58.7 mm stroke, and 11.2:1 compression ratio, favors low-end flexibility over frantic high-rev surges. For slicing through traffic and chaining together red lights, it's more than enough. For overtaking on A-roads, you'll need to plan ahead. The 7.1-liter tank remains modest, but the restrained fuel consumption typical of this type of engine should allow decent range for daily use.
The chassis features a telescopic fork with 100 mm of travel, a reasonable compromise for soaking up Parisian potholes without turning the machine into a magic carpet. The 13-inch wheels, fitted with 110/70 tires up front and 130/70 at the rear, offer a good balance between agility and stability. Braking relies on two 230 mm discs, one at each wheel. Nothing to rival a maxi-scooter, but perfectly coherent for the machine's 132 kg wet weight. The seat, set at 770 mm, will suit most riders, short or tall, without any issues.
Against the competition, the NMAX 125 Tech MAX 2025 goes up against the Honda PCX 125 and the Kymco Downtown 125, two benchmarks in the segment. The PCX plays the card of legendary reliability and exemplary fuel economy, while the Kymco banks on an aggressive price-to-equipment ratio. The Yamaha, for its part, tries to stand out through connectivity and build quality. The TFT display with Garmin integration is a genuine selling point for urban commuters who want to keep an eye on their route without pulling out their phone. The premium seat promises better comfort on the daily commute. Whether these refinements hold up over time or amount to mere marketing window dressing remains to be seen.
This Yamaha NMAX 125 Tech MAX is clearly aimed at city riders who want a polished, connected 125 scooter with a touch of prestige without stepping up to a maxi-scooter. If you're looking for a bare-bones, budget-friendly mobility tool, the standard NMAX will do the job for less. But if the price of a Yamaha NMAX 125 Tech MAX 2025 doesn't make you flinch and you appreciate the small technological touches, this variant has plenty to appeal. Yamaha refines its recipe year after year, and the 2026 version will need to maintain this standard to stay in the race against increasingly sharp rivals. A good premium scooter — not revolutionary, but well thought out for its playground.
