Overview
Who said the British don't know how to play the bad boy? With the 2015 Triumph 865 Speedmaster, Hinckley proves its little custom knows how to bare its teeth against the American competition. Since its first updates in 2006 and 2007, the machine has steadily toughened up its looks, and this version pushes the dial even further into dark territory. Everything gets the treatment: headlight bucket, wheels, foot controls, shock springs, air filter cover. Black cloaks every corner of the beast, giving it a frankly hostile stance that eyes up the Harley-Davidson 883 Iron without the slightest hesitation.

But the Triumph 865 Speedmaster doesn't settle for merely looking menacing. The changes introduced in 2009 and refined over subsequent model years have thoroughly rewritten the brief. The 41 mm fork shed its covers to show off its polished sliders, the front wheel grew from 18 to 19 inches with a new spoke pattern, and the rear fender was chopped clean for a sharper look. On the chassis side, a wheelbase shortened by 55 mm makes the steering livelier at low speed — a real asset for a custom meant to thread through city traffic. The tubular steel cradle wraps it all up with enough rigidity to never feel vague through slow corners. Braking, handled by a 310 mm disc up front and a 285 mm disc at the rear, gets the job done without any particular fanfare. Adequate, nothing more.
Where the 2016 Speedmaster and its neighbouring model years stand out is in the compromise between style and life in the saddle. The seat perched at just 690 mm reassures shorter riders, and the wide handlebar offers a comfortable leverage that eases the shoulders on long urban rides. You sit low, plant both feet flat, and ride. The 865 cc parallel twin with a 270-degree crank sings a very different tune from Milwaukee's V-twins. Its 61 horsepower delivered at 6,800 rpm won't scare anyone, but the 73.5 Nm of torque available from just 3,300 rpm provides punchy acceleration in traffic. The five-speed gearbox is enough to exploit this cruiser temperament, and the 19.3-litre tank allows decent range before hitting the pump.
At €9,390, the Triumph 865 Speedmaster positions itself as a credible entry point into the custom world for anyone who refuses to sign with Harley. Its 250 kg wet weight remains reasonable for the category, and its top speed of 180 km/h is a reminder that this is not a machine built for the motorway but for the boulevard and the quiet back road. Against the 883 Iron, it offers a distinct engine character and careful British build quality. Against Japanese customs, it plays the charisma and heritage card. Its ideal audience? The urban rider or weekend cruiser who wants an accessible custom — not too heavy, with real personality. Those who want more under the seat can always look toward the Thunderbird Storm and its 1,700 cc, but the price tag doubles as well. For a first custom or an unpretentious ride, the Speedmaster remains a solid and well-judged choice.
