Overview
Who could possibly need 2,458 cc under the seat? Nobody, and that's precisely what makes the 2023 Triumph Rocket III R Chrome Edition so fascinating. This motorcycle doesn't exist to fill a need. It exists to provoke a visceral reaction — the one a rider feels when twisting the throttle and having 221 Nm of torque wrench their arms from just 4,000 rpm. A three-cylinder engine of this displacement simply doesn't exist anywhere else in global production. Triumph reigns alone over this territory of excess.

Every year, the British manufacturer dresses its Rocket in a special livery to keep the flame alive. After the Gold Line editions, it's Chrome's turn for the 2023 model year. The tank receives an artisanal treatment requiring over five hours of manual labor between priming, painting, and chrome plating. The result is a curved mirror, stretched between the handlebars and the seat, catching light like a beacon in the night. Availability is limited to the model year, giving the machine collectible status. The price follows suit: €26,095, a sum that places this Rocket in the same waters as a Ducati Diavel V4 or a BMW R 18 — two rivals that also play the muscle-and-prestige card but with considerably smaller engines.
Beneath the chrome, the mechanicals remain identical to the standard version. The inline three-cylinder produces 167 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, transmitted to the rear wheel through a shaft drive and a six-speed gearbox. The aluminum frame handles the stresses of this massive powerplant while a 47 mm inverted fork and a rear mono-shock manage the 291 kg dry weight with reasonable travel of 120 and 107 mm respectively. The Brembo Stylema braking system, with its dual 320 mm front discs in radial mount, is up to the task of reining in all that power. It needs to be, when pushing this mechanical cathedral toward its 235 km/h top speed. Electronic equipment is equally comprehensive: riding modes, traction control, ABS, cruise control, keyless start, color TFT display, and hill hold assist. Triumph understood that a motorcycle at this price point and of this stature had to deliver a flawless level of technology.
The seat, perched at just 773 mm, allows average-sized riders to plant their feet on the ground — a critical point given the weight of the package. The 18-liter tank demands frequent stops if the right wrist gets generous, but nobody buys a Rocket III R to cross the country in one go. This motorcycle is built for Sunday rides, rallies, and turning heads at café terraces. It's aimed at an experienced rider, a lover of raw sensations and exceptional machines, who wants to ride something nobody else in the parking lot owns.

The main criticism is precisely that this Chrome edition brings nothing mechanical to the table. Not a single extra horsepower, no revised suspension settings, no exclusive accessories. You're paying for the chrome artisan's craftsmanship and the model's rarity. It's a deliberate choice by Triumph, banking on emotion rather than spec-sheet upgrades. It's up to each buyer to decide whether a gleaming tank is worth the premium. One thing is certain: spotting a Rocket III R Chrome on the road is a spectacle that neither a Harley-Davidson V-Rod nor any Japanese machine can offer. Triumph invented a category of its own — the monumental roadster — and continues to occupy it unchallenged.
