Overview

One could hardly say that Suzuki has always been the most aggressive in the jungle of large custom motorcycles. Its Marauder 1600 seemed like a gentle giant, more present to occupy space than to truly challenge the behemoths of Kawasaki or Honda. But in 2007, the Japanese manufacturer decided to go on the offensive with the VZ-R Intruder M 1800 R, a name that clearly announces its intentions: here, you don't come to be an extra.

Suzuki VZ-R INTRUDER M 1800 R

Faced with the VN 2000 from Kawasaki, the Yamaha Road Star Warrior, or the Honda VTX, the Suzuki adopts a different strategy. Its V-twin engine of 1783 cm³ is not the largest, but it becomes the most powerful in the group, with 125 declared horsepower. This search for pure performance, rather than rotating mass, is reflected in its internal dimensions: a monumental bore of 112 mm, a record for a production motorcycle, combined with a relatively short stroke of 90.5 mm. The engine, inspired by GSX-R technology, aims for high revs and power rather than low-speed torque. This is a bold choice for a custom, which places this Intruder in a very specific power-cruiser niche.

Its look confirms this offbeat approach. Far from the classic and timeless lines of its rivals, the M 1800 R displays a futuristic, almost aggressive design. Its 43 mm inverted fork and radial brake calipers, a first for a custom, give it the appearance of a sports bike in disguise. The split dashboard, with a digital tachometer in front of the handlebars and an analog speedometer on the tank graduated up to 240 km/h, reinforces this feeling of a hybrid motorcycle, between tradition and radical modernity. The rest of the specifications remain conventional for the category, with a 240 mm rear tire and a considerable weight of 347 kg fully fueled.

On the road, this philosophy creates a two-faced machine. The engine, lively and capable of propelling the mass up to 220 km/h, offers more sporty sensations than those of a large classic twin. But the weight and geometry constantly remind you that you are riding a custom, with limited maneuverability and a very relaxed riding position. The radial braking is effective, but must manage considerable inertia. It is a motorcycle for a particular rider, who seeks brute power and an avant-garde style in a category that is often conservative, without wanting to make the total sacrifice of comfort and cruising attitude.

Suzuki VZ-R INTRUDER M 1800 R

Ultimately, the Suzuki Intruder M 1800 R is a courageous and unique proposition. It doesn't seek to be the gentlest or most authentic, but the most powerful and modern. For 13,999 euros at the time, it offered a unique experience, a power-cruiser that thought like a sports bike. It will appeal to those who want a custom capable of surprising on a winding road or turning heads in the city, but it will not convince purists attached to the slow and massive fundamentals of the category. Suzuki played the card of difference, and that is what defines its character.
