Overview

What’s the point of a mid-size trail bike? To travel without breaking the bank, to explore without specializing, to enjoy yourself without complication. Within this well-defined niche, the Suzuki V-Strom 650XT, with a price tag around €9600, poses a simple question: is it the most balanced? Its price, for a machine with a clearly adventurous spirit, is in line with the competition, but its argument is more subtle.

Suzuki V-Strom 650XT

This XT doesn't revolutionize anything. It simply adds spoked wheels, a plastic engine guard, and handguards to the standard version. These three extra kilograms and these fittings give it character, an intention. The spoked wheels are a real plus for those who plan to get off the pavement, even if the engine guard, less robust than an aluminum model, remains mostly aesthetic. It's a style statement, a signal sent to the Tenéré 700 and the Versys 650: I'm ready for adventure, even if my 216 kg fully fueled and my ground clearance of 170 mm remain reasonable.

The heart of the machine, this 645 cm3 V2, is an old companion who has aged well. With 71 horsepower at 8800 rpm and 69 Nm of torque, it doesn't go for brutality. It goes for regularity, reliability, and frugality, with consumption often around 3.5 liters per 100 km. The Euro 5 emissions standards have even slightly improved its behavior, without taking away its supple and accessible character. It's an engine for the touring rider who prefers the length of the journey to top speed, even if the 185 km/h in a straight line are achievable.

On the road, that’s where it excels. Its aluminum twin-spar frame, its 43 mm fork, and its rear suspension provide remarkable stability. The two-level traction control, the adjustable screen, and aids like Easy Start make life easy. The braking, with its two 310 mm front discs, is effective without being sporty. It’s a machine designed for comfort and safety, for the user who wants a motorcycle capable of everything without ever becoming intimidating.

The target audience is clear: the rider who wants a single machine for the city, country roads, and long journeys. The V-Strom 650XT is a brilliant compromise, but a compromise nonetheless. It’s not the lightest, not the most powerful, not the most radical in the adventure domain. But it’s probably the most versatile and reassuring. Its price, often the first question asked by a prospect, is justified by this unwavering versatility and reputation for solidity. We’ll just regret the absence of a center stand, a detail on a motorcycle that aims to be practical. For many, this balanced response will be the right one.
