Overview
Twenty years in service and still in the lineup. The Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom is one of those motorcycles that needs no introduction, so deeply ingrained is it in the French mid-size adventure bike landscape. Except that 2026 marks a turning point: the Euro 5+ regulation sounds the death knell for this generation, and only remaining stock will find buyers. An end of the line for a machine that has spanned eras, weathered the arrival of the Yamaha Tracer 7 and the Kawasaki Versys 650, and even watched its own big sister, the 800 V-Strom, show up — without ever losing its place. The new price of the Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom, set at 7,799 euros, remains its most formidable argument against the competition. The Triumph Tiger 660, which recently appeared with its three-cylinder engine, asks barely a few hundred euros more for a spec sheet that looks better on paper. But paper doesn't tell the whole story.

Beneath the angular fairing inherited from the former 1000, the 645 cc 90° L-twin carries on. This V-twin, born on the SV 650, has been through so many versions you could write its biography. Revised to meet Euro 5 as early as 2021, then refined with 60 new parts (pistons, camshafts, 10-hole injectors), it delivers 71 horsepower at 8,800 rpm and 62 Nm of torque at 6,300 rpm. These aren't numbers that make a track rider's heart race, but the torque curve, generous from the mid-range onward, makes this motorcycle a docile partner in the city as well as on main roads. The 11.2:1 compression ratio and the 6-speed gearbox contribute to a mechanical refinement that's hard to fault. For those looking for a used Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom, the 2017 to 2022 model years offer the best value for money, as the mechanical foundation is identical.
The 2017 redesign broke with the rounded looks of the 2004–2016 generations. The design is more aggressive, more assertive, with a single headlight that won't appeal to everyone. The Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT, with its spoked wheels, engine guard, and handguards, pushes the adventure dial one notch further for those who want to leave the tarmac. On the chassis side, the aluminum twin-spar frame and swingarm haven't changed. Suzuki trusts what works. The 43 mm telehydraulic fork offers 150 mm of travel, the rear monoshock the same. The brakes — two 310 mm Tokico discs up front and a 260 mm Nissin disc at the rear — do the job without claiming to rival sportbike-grade hardware. The wet weight of 213 kg and the 835 mm seat height place the machine in an accessible zone, even for an average-sized rider. The 20-liter tank promises comfortable range on long trips.

On the electronics front, Suzuki has closed part of the gap. The two-mode traction control, which can be switched off, monitors wheel slip every 4 milliseconds by cross-referencing wheel speed, selected gear, and throttle position. On a 71-horsepower machine, its usefulness is debatable, but on a greasy road or a dirt track, it fully earns its keep. The Low RPM Assist system eases low-speed maneuvers by adjusting engine speed as the clutch is released, and the Easy Start system simplifies firing up the engine. The dashboard, carried over from the former 1000, combines an analog tachometer with digital displays for speed, selected gear, fuel consumption, and temperature. A control pad on the handlebar allows menu navigation without taking your hands off the controls. On the other hand, the center stand remains optional, as do the pannier mounting plates. For a motorcycle aimed at tourers and travelers, that's a regrettable omission. Aftermarket accessories for the Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom are available in abundance, but one would have preferred Suzuki to include more as standard.

The Suzuki V-Strom 650 doesn't revolutionize anything. It's not trying to. Its strength lies in the reliability of a proven package, an engine with a flexible character, and a versatility that suits the A2-licensed beginner just as well as the high-mileage tourer. Against the Tiger 660 or the Tracer 7, it shows its age in certain areas, but its competitive price and reputation for ruggedness secure it a prime spot on the market, whether new or secondhand. If you come across one of the last 2026 examples, don't wait too long.
