Overview
What took Suzuki so long? For years, the DL 650 V-Strom played the role of the dutiful student—reliable and discreet—while the Triumph Tiger 800 XC and BMW F 800 GS Adventure strutted around in full adventure gear. With the Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT 2016, Hamamatsu finally decided to up its game. The XT suffix is a promise of bolder character, a machine no longer content with the daily commute but eyeing dirt tracks and back roads.

First visual impression: the redesigned front beak radically changes the look of the machine. The Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT no longer resembles a timid tourer. It sports the face of a proper adventure bike, ready to chew through gravel. The spoked wheels, tubeless-compatible in 110/80-19 at the front and 150/70-17 at the rear, confirm this direction. ABS remains standard—a non-negotiable feature in 2016 for this segment. But it's the accessories catalog that gives the XT its true dimension: tubular crash bars, aluminum panniers with a rally-raid look, skid plate, handguards, auxiliary lights. Enough to turn a well-mannered all-rounder into an expedition mount. The bill climbs, obviously, but Suzuki starts at a price of 8,599 euros that remains very competitive against the German and British competition.
On the mechanical side, we find the 90° L-twin displacing 645 cc, a proven engine delivering 69 horsepower at 8,800 rpm and 58.8 Nm of torque at 6,400 rpm. Not enough to tear up the tarmac, but a usable power curve and a flexible character that forgives a lot. The six-speed gearbox does its job without complaint, and the chain drive remains conventional and easy to maintain. The aluminum twin-spar frame offers sound, predictable, reassuring handling. The 43 mm telescopic hydraulic fork and the rear monoshock each provide 150 mm of travel—an honest compromise between road and trail. The seat, perched at 835 mm, remains accessible to most riders, and its height is adjustable to suit the pilot. The shock preload can be adjusted via a knob accessible without tools, a welcome detail when loading up the bike for a trip.
Then comes the slightly sore point. At 215 kg wet and with only 69 horsepower, the Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT shows its limits when loaded with luggage and a pillion for a long-haul journey. The 20-liter tank provides decent range without being generous. Three or four extra liters would have been appreciated to space out fuel stops on long stages. An engine bumped up to 800 cc would give this platform an entirely different presence against rivals, but Suzuki chose to stick with this mid-size format that appeals to A2 license holders and riders seeking a bike without excess. The Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT 2019 and then the 2022 version would go on to confirm the relevance of this positioning, with welcome cosmetic and electronic updates.
Who is this XT for? The pragmatic rider who wants a single motorcycle capable of doing everything without breaking the bank. Daily commuting, weekend rides, multi-day getaways with luggage. It will never be the queen of off-road nor the fastest on the highway with its top speed capped at 180 km/h. But it will do all of that competently, without breakdowns, without drama, and with a reasonable maintenance budget. And for those looking for a used Suzuki DL 650 V-Strom XT, it's probably one of the best value propositions on the used adventure bike market, given how well the engine ages. A machine without flash but without major flaws—the kind of motorcycle you keep for a long time without ever truly regretting it.
