Overview
Motorcycle: Sherco Draisienne (2024)

Before the Yamaha PW50, before the Honda CRF50, before even knowing what a clutch is, there's this precise moment when a child puts their feet on the ground, pushes, and instinctively understands that two wheels are better than four. Sherco, the Nîmes-based manufacturer often confined to enduro podiums, has decided to seize this first step with a balance bike in its image.
The object weighs 3.4 kg, making it a lighter machine than most adult helmets. The nylon frame absorbs shocks and abuse — and children between 18 months and 4 years distribute it generously. The saddle adjusts from 320 to 440 mm, covering a good range of growth without having to repurchase anything. Spoked rims and mixed tires are not decoration: with 100 mm of ground clearance, the little rider can venture onto a dirt path without the machine giving up at the first pebble.
What strikes you is the total absence of electronic aids. No ABS, obviously, no traction control, no anti-stall system. One could smile, but that's precisely the point. A child learning to balance without a safety net develops a true proprioception, that sense of imbalance that later distinguishes the natural rider from the one who clings to their electronic aids. Sherco doesn't hide it, it's a philosophy consistent with the brand's offroad DNA.
The price, on the other hand, gives pause for thought. €115 for a balance bike is noticeably more than the generic models found in supermarkets, and the segment is competitive, with brands like Puky or Strider offering robust products at comparable or lower prices. What you're paying for here is the brand's historic blue color, a refined finish, and limited-series production. For a fan of the brand, the argument is clear. For others, it will be necessary to weigh the emotional attachment against the price difference.
That said, the idea is right. Training a future rider starts here, long before the first engine, simply by teaching them not to fall.
