Overview
Peugeot and motorized two-wheeled vehicles have a long and winding history, marked by iconic 103 models and generations of teenagers who learned mechanics with Mobylettes. Then silence. Decades without real commitment to this segment, until this announced return to 50cc with a gearbox, with a platform manufactured in France and an assumed lineage with Sherco, whose 50 Supermotard models served as a working base. This is no coincidence: the two brands share the same technical base, and it shows.

At the heart of the machine turns the Minarelli AM6, this 49.70 cc 2-stroke single-cylinder engine that powers a good portion of the segment for years. Liquid-cooled, fueled by a 16 mm Dell'Orto carburetor, it develops 8 horsepower limited to 45 km/h to comply with the French regulatory framework. The 6-speed gearbox is the master asset of this "moped gearbox" category: it allows you to learn to manage a clutch, a real school of riding before the A2 license. At 14 years old, you can legally mount the saddle, and it is precisely this public that Peugeot targets with the XP6 Supermotard.
The Supermotard trim is well-executed: line inspired by the paddocks, digital dashboard, sport-touring tires, and above all a 300 mm disc brake at the front that sharply contrasts with the sometimes low-quality equipment found in entry-level models. The 37 mm telescopic fork and the single shock absorber ensure healthy road behavior. The simple steel cradle frame is nothing exotic, but it is a consistent choice for a learning motorcycle at €3,800. This price positions the XP6 in the high average of the segment, facing competitors such as the Beta RR 50 Motard or the Rieju MRT 50. The Sherco lineage plays in its favor here: you are not starting from scratch, the technical foundation is proven.

The XP6 range is not limited to this Supermotard. An R version adopts an inverted 41 mm fork and spoked rims for a more assertive character, while a terrain-oriented version pushes even further with 21/18 inch wheels, TT tires and suspension travel designed for trails. Peugeot is therefore playing on several fronts with the same base, which is an intelligent strategy to cover the desires of a young public divided between urban asphalt and the call of the land.
This return of Peugeot in the 50cc moped gearboxes deserves attention. The brand from Sochaux capitalizes on real nostalgia and a French industrial image to differentiate itself in a segment dominated by Spanish and Italian brands. The bet is not won in advance: the Minarelli AM6 is reliable but aging, and the maintenance of a liquid-cooled 2-stroke requires a certain rigor that not all young drivers necessarily have. Nevertheless, for a first contact with mechanics, the road and the sensations of riding, the XP6 Supermotard offers an honest, consistent package, and carried by a name that still resonates in garages.
