Overview
Who today would have the audacity to write a handwritten letter to a motorcycle manufacturer, as was done in the aftermath of the war? MV Agusta, in its aristocratic delirium, imagines this correspondence to present its new Superveloce 800 “98”. It’s a nod to the company’s first creation, the 98 velocipede of 1945, but transposed into a modern machine that is no longer a toy. This limited edition of 300 units, at €31,099, is a stylistic exercise where the past dialogues with very current technology.

The heart of the matter remains the 798 cc triple, but here boosted by an Arrow kit. The reworked ECU and triple exhaust release 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm, a figure that places the machine in the yard of serious neo-retro sportbikes, like the Ducati SuperSport or certain versions of the Triumph Speed Triple. The torque, of 88 Nm, arrives high in the rev range, at 10,100 rpm, which confirms a nervous character, typical of MV’s. The dry weight announced is 173 kg, but with the racing parts of the specific gearbox, it would drop to 165 kg. On the track or on a winding road, this agility should be a major asset.
The aesthetics are the main argument. The "Rosso Verghera" paint, this burgundy-plum shade recalling the first 98, is applied by hand in several layers. The "Argento Ago" stripe and the laser-engraved plate on the headstock are collector's details. Kineo spoked wheels and Pirelli tires with a special inscription celebrating 150 years of the brand complete this historical approach. It’s beautiful, it’s precious, but one can question the usefulness of such elements on a machine that, beneath the varnish, is a high-performance sportbike equipped with a 5.5-inch TFT screen, riding modes, lean-sensitive ABS, and Brembo Stylema brakes.
This Superveloce 98 is a motorcycle for enthusiasts, for those who want a grand touring machine with the aura of a museum piece. It is not for beginners, nor for the pure track rider seeking brute performance. At this price, it dialogues with machines like the Norton Commando 961 or certain special BMW R nineT models. The 16.5-liter tank and the 830 mm seat suggest road uses rather than urban journeys. MV Agusta is playing here on its heritage, with certain aesthetic success, but one can question the relevance of such an approach in the face of more versatile or more radical competitors. It’s a desirable object, a tribute, but perhaps too niche to be considered an everyday motorcycle.
