Overview

What drives a manufacturer to completely rethink the engine of a superbike already at the top of its game? At MV Agusta, the answer comes down to two Italian words: Corsa Corta. Short stroke. Behind this name lies a deep overhaul of the 998 cc inline four-cylinder that propels the MV Agusta F4 1000 RR beyond the symbolic 200-horsepower threshold. To achieve this, the engineers in Varese shortened the piston stroke to 50.9 mm while widening the bore to 79 mm, yielding ultra-oversquare dimensions designed to climb into the rev range in search of power. The result: 201 hp at 13,600 rpm and a redline set at 14,000 rpm. Torque peaks at 113.8 Nm from 9,600 rpm. That is the spec sheet of the MV Agusta F4 1000 RR distilled to its purest expression: a racing engine in a production frame.

MV Agusta F4 1000 RR

The work on the engine block was not limited to changing bore and stroke figures. The valves, now made of titanium and larger in diameter, allow more mixture to flow through. The injection throttle bodies grow to 49 mm, the intake trumpets adopt variable height, and the exhaust system features larger-volume headers. The power of the MV Agusta F4 1000 RR is not a marketing figure inflated on a lenient dyno; it is the product of methodical engineering. The six-speed cassette-type gearbox comes paired with a quickshifter and a slipper clutch. Two engine maps and eight-level adjustable traction control round out the electronic arsenal. As early as 2013, the F4 range had received titanium connecting rods, a rebalanced crankshaft, and lighter wheels. In 2014, Bosch 9MP ABS came along to close the braking chapter. The Corsa Corta version, introduced as early as 2012, consolidated these evolutions into a vintage that left a lasting impression, from the MV Agusta F4 1000 RR 2013 through to the final production runs.

On the chassis side, the tubular trellis frame paired with aluminum plates carries over the proven F4 foundation, but every detail is optimized. Geometry can be finely adjusted thanks to calibrated components that modify the rear axle and swingarm height. The Öhlins suspension—a 43 mm NIX inverted fork and a TTX36 mono-shock—can be controlled from the dashboard via electronic management that adapts damping to the selected engine map. Only the rear spring preload still requires a spanner. The braking system is fully radial: two 320 mm discs clamped by Brembo four-piston monoblock calipers up front, and a 210 mm disc at the rear. The forged aluminum wheels help keep dry weight at 190 kg, a figure that places this Italian machine in the big leagues alongside the BMW S 1000 RR and the Kawasaki ZX-10RR.

What is the price of an MV Agusta F4 1000 RR? When new, the bill came to 26,890 euros, a steep price but one consistent with the level of equipment. On the used market, prices vary depending on the model year. An MV Agusta F4 1000 RR 2011 or 2012 trades for noticeably less than a 2019 or 2020 model, the latter benefiting from all the evolutions accumulated over the years. The question of the price of an MV Agusta F4 1000 RR 2019 in France depends heavily on condition and mileage, but one should expect moderate depreciation for a machine produced in limited numbers.

Let's be frank: the F4 1000 RR is not an easy motorcycle. It does not forgive sloppiness, does not flatter the weekend rider, and imposes a radical riding position with its 830 mm seat height. Its 17-liter tank limits range on long rides. It targets demanding track riders and discerning collectors—those who accept the fight with a machine in order to extract its very essence. Against the Panigale, RSV4 RF, and Yamaha R1M, it counters with a raw temperament and the mechanical refinement of a master craftsman. Less docile than a Japanese bike, less common than a Ducati, the F4 RR remains a thing apart in the hypersport landscape. A motorcycle that must be earned, and one that rewards those who take the time to understand it.
