Overview

Eighty years. That's how long it took the small firm from Varese to go from a modest mechanical workshop, born in the rubble of postwar Italy, to one of the most revered names in motorcycle racing. To celebrate this anniversary, MV Agusta doesn't settle for a commemorative sticker on the tank. The brand is releasing the F3 RR 800 Ottantesimo, a limited edition of 500 units that blends heritage and performance with a sincerity rarely seen in the often predictable world of special editions.

MV Agusta F3 RR 800 Ottantesimo

The history is worth pausing on for a moment. In 1945, Domenico Agusta, son of an aviator count, launched Meccanica Verghera with a small 98 cc engine on the drawing board, a project shelved during the occupation. The goal was simple, almost humble: build an affordable machine to get Italy moving again. Eight decades later, the F3 RR produces 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm, extracted from a 798 cc triple with a 13.3:1 compression ratio that betrays its fierce temperament. Peak torque of 88.1 Nm, available at 10,100 rpm, ensures razor-sharp mid-gear acceleration. A far cry from the moped it all started with.

For this Ottantesimo, MV Agusta has brought back the red and grey "Ago" livery, a direct nod to Giacomo Agostini and the glory years in Grand Prix racing. The logo has been redesigned drawing inspiration from the brand's very first emblem, applied to the tank and front fender. The gesture is coherent, never gratuitous. But the real surprise lies in the kit that accompanies each unit. The color-matched seat cowl and CNC-machined fuel cap are nice touches; the titanium Akrapovic exhaust, however, is anything but trivial. With that Slovenian pipe fitted, the triple climbs to 155 horsepower and the bike sheds eight kilograms. On a machine that already tips the scales at 192.5 kg dry, that's a gain you feel from the very first corner.

On the chassis side, the recipe remains that of an uncompromising track weapon. The tubular steel trellis frame, bolted to twin aluminum side plates, delivers a stiffness-to-weight ratio that few competitors in this segment can match. The 43 mm inverted fork and rear monoshock, both fully adjustable across all parameters, are aimed at riders who know what they're doing. Radially mounted Brembo Stylema calipers biting 320 mm discs provide benchmark braking performance. Against a Ducati Panigale V2 or a Triumph Daytona 660, the F3 RR plays in a league of its own thanks to its level of finish and its single-sided swingarm, a true visual signature. The RR version also stands out with its carbon fiber components—winglets, fairing, and front fender—which are not merely cosmetic. The 830 mm seat height and 16.5-liter tank are reminders, though, that this bike wasn't built for Sunday touring. With a claimed top speed of 240 km/h and a six-speed gearbox whose quickshifter invites you to wring out every gear, the F3 RR lives for the track and twisting roads.

MV Agusta F3 RR 800 Ottantesimo

Then there's the question of price. At €23,600, the Ottantesimo sits well above a standard F3 RR, and you have to accept that you're paying for the prestige of the limited series as much as for the Akrapovic exhaust. For a brand devotee, a collector, or a seasoned rider who wants a middleweight sportbike with a unique character, the investment is justified. For everyone else, the "standard" F3 RR already delivers 95% of the thrill. With this Ottantesimo, MV Agusta proves that eighty years of history don't weigh much when you carry them with this much mechanical elegance.
