Overview
When a Russian-American interior designer decides to lay his hands on an Italian sportbike, the result inevitably defies conventional frameworks. The MV Agusta F3 800 Crosby Studios, unveiled in 2021, is not a motorcycle designed for the track or the road. It is a conceptual object, a gallery piece mounted on two wheels, born from the meeting between Harry Nuriev, founder of Crosby Studios, and the Varese manufacturer. The kind of project that instantly divides opinion: some will see genius, others the whim of a creative in search of a canvas.

The foundation, however, is far from trivial. Beneath this monochrome livery that blurs the lines and drowns the volumes lies the 798 cc triple-cylinder of the F3 800, a powerplant that puts out 147 horsepower at 13,000 rpm and 88 Nm of torque at 10,100 rpm. The engine, with its 13.3:1 compression ratio and oversquare bore and stroke of 79 x 54.3 mm, remains one of the sharpest units in its class. Mounted in a steel trellis frame bolted to aluminum side plates, suspended by a 43 mm inverted fork and a single rear shock, all contained within 173 kg dry, the F3 offers a genuine sportbike chassis. Radial-mount dual 320 mm front discs, a single 220 mm rear disc, six-speed gearbox, 240 km/h top speed. On paper, this machine holds its own against a Yamaha R3 in spirit, while playing in the premium middleweight league. A 16.5-liter fuel tank and an 830 mm seat height round out a package built for sporty riders.
But this Crosby Studios version is not to be judged on its performance. It was conceived as a one-off piece for ComplexCon, the American festival where streetwear, urban art, and pop culture collide. Nuriev incorporated it into an installation called "The Garage," where the motorcycle sat alongside an MV Agusta AMO RC bicycle, a ladder, a hose, and clothing, all fused into a visual camouflage that erases contours and distorts the perception of objects. The principle: dissolve the boundary between the utilitarian and the artwork. Whether or not you buy into the concept, the approach has the merit of being coherent. And profitable, since a capsule collection of sweatshirts, t-shirts, and jackets accompanied the launch, distributed through the official MV Agusta network.
This is not the first time the Italian brand has lent its fairings to the world of fashion and design. Special editions signed by outside creators have been part of MV Agusta's commercial DNA for years. The strategy is clear: position the brand beyond the mere motorcycle world, in a territory of luxury and exclusivity where Ducati also plays its cards with regular collaborations. The difference is that MV pushes the needle further into abstraction. Where Ducati remains legible, MV Agusta accepts the risk of losing part of its audience along the way.
One legitimate question remains for the average rider: what is the concrete appeal? None, if you are looking for a sportbike to actually ride. The standard F3 800 or the Superveloce fill that role with far more relevance. But this Crosby Studios edition is a reminder that MV Agusta cultivates a singular positioning in the motorcycle landscape — that of a brand that envisions itself as a mechanical fashion house. You can find that pretentious. You can also acknowledge that nobody else does it with quite as much audacity.
