Overview
When an entire city becomes the pretext for a special edition, you know you're entering territory where the motorcycle flirts with the art object. MV Agusta, never one to shy away from a bold move, pushed the envelope to its limit in 2010 with this Brutale 990 R Brand Milano, a roadster dressed in the colors of the Lombard capital. White and red, like the coat of arms of Milan, reproduced in several places on the machine. The initiative was part of the launch of the "Brand Milano" label, an effort by the metropolis to showcase its craftsmanship. MV Agusta seized the opportunity, and the result is as much a cultural manifesto as it is a collector's motorcycle.

Beneath the Milanese dress lies the mechanical foundation of the Brutale 990 R, and it's no bit player. The 998 cc inline four-cylinder, fed by a 13:1 compression ratio, delivers 139 horsepower at 10,600 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. Figures that, in 2010, placed the beautiful Italian machine at the top of the heap against the Kawasaki Z1000 or Triumph Speed Triple of the era. The short-stroke 76 x 55 mm bore and stroke betray an engine that loves to rev, with a fierce character typical of Schiranna's powerplants. The six-speed gearbox transmits it all to the rear wheel via chain drive — no surprises there, but with the efficiency expected at this price point.
And speaking of price: 16,000 euros. In 2010, that was a steep entry ticket for a roadster, even an Italian one. MV Agusta was clearly playing the exclusivity card rather than the value-for-money angle. For comparison, a Z1000 could be had for around 11,000 euros, and a Speed Triple for roughly 12,000. The premium was justified by the brand's prestige, the quality of the chassis, and in the case of this Brand Milano edition, by the unique character of a machine destined to parade through the city's finest landmarks before taking its place in a collector's showcase.
On the chassis front, MV didn't do things by halves. Chrome-molybdenum steel trellis frame, 50 mm inverted fork, rear monoshock, radially mounted braking with twin 310 mm discs up front and a 210 mm disc at the rear. All kept within a dry weight of 190 kg, which remains reasonable for a machine of this displacement. The 830 mm seat height makes it accessible without being low, and the 23-liter tank allows decent range for a roadster built for Sunday rides rather than highway hauls. The 120/70-17 and 190/55-17 tires confirm an unapologetically sporty vocation, with a claimed top speed of 265 km/h.
This Brutale 990 R Brand Milano was not a motorcycle designed for the average rider. It was an object of desire, conceived for collectors and lovers of Italian craftsmanship, those who believe a motorcycle can also be a cultural vessel. MV Agusta has always known how to play that card, sometimes at the expense of reliability or after-sales network. But for a unique piece offered to a city, the question doesn't even arise. It joins the pantheon of special editions that are valued as much for the story they tell as for what they do on the road.
