Overview

Weighing in at 85 kilograms, with a seat height of 960 mm and a water-cooled 124.80 cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine: the KTM 125 EXC 2012 doesn’t seek to impress on paper. It prefers to impress in special stages. This model year arrives with a completely revised frame and an optimized engine, and KTM didn’s just slap on a new KTM 125 EXC graphic kit to justify the update.

KTM 125 EXC

The engine first. The new airbox, combined with a redesigned intake manifold, allows the small twin to breathe better at high RPM. The resonance tube of the exhaust pipe has also been reworked to collaborate with the power valve: the RPM climb is sharp, with that explosive character typical of competition two-strokes, but without unmanageable brutality. For a rider in the E1 category, this is precisely what is expected. The bore/stroke ratio of 54 x 54.5 mm and a compression ratio of 12.5:1 give an engine that likes to rev, not a tractor for tackling obstacles.

The reworked chrome-molybdenum steel frame constitutes the real change of this generation. Its resistance to lateral torsion improves significantly, and it absorbs shocks transmitted by the rolling chassis better. The forged aluminum swingarm, lighter than the previous generation, repositions the shock absorber more centrally for a consistent weight distribution. The rear PDS suspension gains 7 mm of travel and lies flatter, which refines impact progressiveness. Up front, the 48 mm WP 4860 MXMA inverted fork, open cartridge, offers an expanded adjustment range with remarkable front-end sensitivity for this segment. The wheelbase of 1471 mm and the ground clearance of 355 mm complete a geometric layout clearly oriented towards pure off-road.

The wheels deserve attention. Machined hubs, Excel rims, zinc/nickel treated spokes, aluminum nuts: every gram has been scrutinized to reduce unsprung mass. On an enduro, these details make the difference between a motorcycle that follows your hand and a motorcycle that discusses in fast curves. The road-homologated KTM 125 EXC is fitted with 90/90-21 tires at the front and 120/90-18 tires at the rear, compatible with a conversion to a KTM 125 EXC supermotard if asphalt attracts you. The subject of the KTM 125 EXC SM conversion is, in fact, one of the most popular on this base, and the homologated supermotard result is not without interest for those seeking a light and lively machine in an urban environment.

Displayed at €7050 for this 2012 version, the KTM 125 EXC price is consistent with the premium positioning of the Austrian brand. Faced with a Husqvarna TE 125 or a Gas Gas EC 125 from the same era, the KTM justifies its price by the quality of the WP suspensions and the overall finish. On the KTM 125 EXC used market, well-maintained examples remain sought after, proof that these machines age well when maintenance is followed. It is not a motorcycle for complete beginners, the high seat and the two-stroke character require a minimum of practice, but for a regional competition rider or an experienced enduro rider seeking a light and precise machine, it ticks all the boxes.
