Overview
Does the mid-size sport motorcycle still make sense today? Faced with excessive hypersport machines and overpowered roadsters, the 600 class sometimes seems like a vestige of the past, a niche object for purists. Kawasaki, with its ZX-6R 636, has never really accepted this fate. In 2016, it unveiled this KRT version, a model that loudly proclaims that the passion for high RPMs and chassis precision is not dead. With 131 horsepower released at 13,500 RPM, and a torque of 71.6 Nm that already peaks at 11,500 RPM, this machine is not a simple evolution. It is an affirmation.

This 636 cm³ engine, a four-cylinder breathing racing mechanics, is the central argument. By slightly increasing the displacement compared to the strict 600s, Kawasaki seeks to offer more punch in the mid-range, a real plus for road use without sacrificing the frenzy of the last few thousand RPM. Compared to a pure and uncompromising Yamaha R6, the 636 aims to be more welcoming, more versatile. It doesn’t only target the expert track rider, but also the sporty touring rider who wants to be able to exploit his machine without exclusively living above 10,000 RPM. Its 17-liter tank and a wet weight of 194 kg place it in the middle of the category, but its agility remains that of a true supersport.
Electronics is an area where this Ninja has gained a serious advantage. It borrows technologies from the larger ZX-10R without complexification. The KTRC traction control with its three modes and the two engine maps allow you to play with the traction, to have fun without risking a silly wheelie. The KIBS ABS braking system, particularly sophisticated, is there to secure heavy braking, even in lean, and prevent rear wheel lifts. For a price of 13,349 euros, this suite of assistance features was then a massive argument against often more austere competitors.
The chassis, however, has not undergone a revolution. The aluminum perimeter frame and the robust swingarm ensure precision and rigidity that one will never complain about. The Showa SFF-BPF inverted fork, with its 41 mm, offers a very convincing compromise of settings between sporty handling and absorption of imperfections. The brakes, with their radial four-piston calipers and 310 mm petal discs, are of brutal and immediate effectiveness. Everything here is designed for performance and sensation.
The ZX-6R 636 KRT Edition is therefore a motorcycle that refuses to be confined to a single role. It wants to be able to shine on a circuit on the weekend, without being an ordeal for the daily commute or winding roads. Its audience? The sporty rider who doesn’t want a machine that is too exclusive, the motorcyclist who seeks the sensation of a supersport without the extreme nervousness of a pure 600. Its flaw? This atypical displacement excludes it from official Supersport competitions, limited to 600 cm³. But for the average rider, that doesn't matter. Kawasaki has simply tweaked a more substantial, more accessible, and ultimately smarter supersport than many of its rivals. A motorcycle that proves that the mid-size sport segment can still have substance and character.
