Overview
So, a thirty-year-old 636, does that ring a bell? Not just any, of course. The one that refuses to age, the one that has always had that extra touch of madness in the supersport category. In 2015, to celebrate three decades of Ninja, Kawasaki pulls out all the stops with this ZX-6R 636 30th Anniversary Performance. A lengthy name for a motorcycle that, it, goes straight to the point.

The idea was simple: dress the best 600 of the moment – yes, I claim it – in the colors of glory. Not those of the original GPZ 900R, no. We're talking about the green and white of the factory teams in World Superbike. A sleek, aggressive livery that perfectly matches the spirit of this machine. But it's not just a paint job. The "Performance" suffix in the name is there for a reason. Kawasaki grafts on an original Akrapovic kit, which does much more than sing a four-voice symphony. It lightens the beast by 2.5 kg and extracts nearly 3 extra horsepower, bringing the total to 131 horsepower at 13,500 rpm. For a track bike that weighs 192 kg fully fueled, we are approaching the power-to-weight ratio of an absolute weapon.
On paper, and especially on the asphalt, this 636 remains an oddity in its category. While everyone insists on 599 cc engines, Kawasaki persists with its 636 cc. The result? A torque of 71.6 Nm that arrives earlier, around 11,500 rpm, and which makes the beast much easier to live with on the track as well as on a winding road. It pulls where others have to scream. The chassis, a surgically precise aluminum perimeter frame, and the adjustable suspension offer a raw, unfinished feeling. Radial braking is a punch in the face, worthy of the performance. It's a motorcycle that doesn't cheat, that demands commitment, but that repays a hundredfold.
For whom? Clearly not for the novice. This jewel at 12,449 euros at the time was aimed at the connoisseur, the demanding track rider who was looking for the ultimate precision weapon in the 600 category, without the compromises of strictly road-going models. The Performance version added that little extra that made the difference: the double-bubble fairing for increased aerodynamics at high speed, the tank protectors, the stripes. Details, but they count when you push the machine in its last third.
Today, this anniversary edition has become a collector's item. It sums up, in itself, the Kawasaki mindset of the 2010s: bold, technical, refusing to blindly follow trends. It wasn't the most versatile, certainly not the most comfortable with its 83 cm seat height, but it was, and remains for many, the most determined. The last of the 636s to embody so purely the "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" spirit. A pure racing product, without embellishment.
