Overview

The 650 consistently delivers charming touches, as seen in 2023 with the addition of more electronics. What has been added to its wiring harness? Two elements, perfectly in line with this trend. First, all lighting now uses LEDs. Then, the rear wheel operates under dynamic control. The Ninja 650 now features KTRC.

Traction control operates here in 3 modes. The first is the most permissive, the second intervenes with more zeal, and for those who do not want to let the assistance manage the watts, it is possible to deactivate it. A few small improvements, amounting to two extra horsepower without changing the profile – that of the most versatile of the Ninjas.

Let's recall that it received a makeover in 2020. Playful and accessible, inspiring the spirit of Kawasaki sportbikes, the 650 has regained prominence with a modified face and a next-generation dashboard. Leaving the Z 650 to battle with the small players in the category, it intends to enhance its sex appeal with a series of refreshing improvements.

It would be too simple to qualify it as a faired roadster given how its silhouette shows a pseudo-sportbike. Oscillating between the Ninja 500 and the ZX-6R 636, its face takes on the identity genetics of Kawa. A movement that began with the H2/H2R and continues to the top of the 1000 Versys. This motorcycle has fangs, but its purpose is not to bite the road. It aims more to seduce city dwellers in the wind, carried away by their time, eager for frills between buildings as much as for fleeting moments when the week flies by.

The front end has evolved considerably, the flanks to a lesser extent, while the fuel tank and rear section have remained unchanged. Aesthetics are not the only beneficiaries of the manufacturer's good offices. Emphasis has been placed on improving the on-board welcome. To this end, the Ninja 650 receives a straighter (and lower) bubble designed to better protect against the wind. The passenger is the big winner, as is their seat, with a new saddle. With 5 mm of thickness in the middle and 10 mm on the sides, posteriors will feel a little more considered.

It’s on the instrumentation that Kawa plays a nice card. No more needles or LCDs but a beautiful 10.9 cm (4.3 inch – slightly smaller than an iPhone 6) TFT screen. The rider thus benefits from a high-tech display, with all the information well arranged, the engaged gear and speed clearly visible, and a bar graph to indicate engine speed. However, there are no handlebar controls to operate it. The Ninja makes up for this with its connectivity: this screen is enriched with a Bluetooth chip. You can thus pair your smartphone and use the 'Rideology' app to retrieve all sorts of information. Like the distance traveled, maintenance operations, certain notifications, etc... This screen also thinks about visual comfort by allowing a choice between a 'negative' or 'positive' display. Moreover, it adapts to the ambient light.

Changes to the chassis are less abundant. The Ninja 650 retains its steel tubular section frame, with a 41 mm conventional fork, a adjustable preload mono-shock, and sufficient braking. Two 300 mm petal discs at the front with double-piston calipers and a 220 mm petal disc, pinched by a single piston. It’s not a sporty bike but it will respond as needed to the solicitations. Thus, almost nothing has changed since the previous version. The "almost" being the new tire compound, Kawa opting for Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2.

The twin cylinder also announces a small update. A few tweaks to the intake and exhaust allow the 649 cm3 to strengthen at mid-range. Without reducing its maximum power capacity, perched at 68 horsepower, at 8,000 rpm. Torque has dropped slightly, to 6.5 mkg (likely due to regulations). This engine already knew how to carry its rider with enjoyment, or even tease a little the dormant speed demon in each of us. Its behavior should be preserved, with that little extra hint in the intermediate growls.

The Kawasaki Ninja 650 completes its evolution with LED eyes – 2023 adds turn signals – to boost the efficiency of its front lighting. The rear has already benefited from this for quite some time. With this package, the machine will not upset its dynamic behavior but intends to place the 'attraction pleasure' cursor a notch higher. Are you hesitating? Not her!
