Overview
The Chief Vintage is back! It really shouldn’t have gone away, given its symbolic aura. It’s the motorcycle that best embodies the Indian image, an expression of retro custom style, timeless, powerful, and majestic.
What most distinguishes the Vintage are its enormous and iconic wrap-around fenders. True skirts for the wheels, giving it that expressive personality. To achieve this exercise in modern nostalgia, the manufacturer transformed the standard Chief by capping the forks, installing spoked wheels, changing the handlebar (higher and wider), and modifying the seat with a suspended single seat.
Thus adorned, the Chief Vintage has a presence as strong and legitimate as its 1940 ancestor. It remembers, it proves it, and the force of its engine will certainly lift the senses as much as the gaze. Before unleashing its near 16 mkg of torque, it takes care of its appearance. As on the model of yesteryear, its valve covers and camshaft covers are silver gray. Everything else on the block is black, deeply black, with the exception of the brand’s emblems on the side covers.
Then comes the time to enjoy it. The air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 will have an increasingly exclusive and captivating flavor given its progressive disappearance from the Indian catalog – three-quarters of Springfield models are now powered by liquid-cooled engines. A Big Block perfectly suited to the spirit of the Vintage: massive, sculptural, omnipresent, with the charm of yesteryear and the heft of today. This engine rumbles, lives, and transports America like an old cowboy with thick arms.
A William Cody... with a smartphone. The Indian Chief Vintage is supervised by three Riding Modes, starts keylessly, is equipped with cruise control, ABS, and a USB port, can deactivate its rear cylinder to avoid overheating, and its circular 4-inch color TFT screen can be paired with the phone via Bluetooth. The Ride Command system, improved and 25% faster, allows for GPS navigation, call control, and music management.
The 2026 Vintage is less expensive than the previous model (2021). It is also much more streamlined. Indian removed its fringe leather saddlebags, its windshield, its auxiliary headlights, its passenger seat, and the large rider seat. It then competed with the Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic. Today, it claims its own heritage.
When the Chief took the 116 ci engine, it sidelined its Vintage version to focus on a bobber theme. The return of this version allows us to rediscover an iconic image: that of legends. What better way to celebrate a 125th anniversary?!
