Overview
One hundred and twenty-five years of history isn't something you celebrate with a sticker on the tank. Indian understood this well, and to mark the milestone, the Minneapolis brand rolled out of its workshops a Chief Vintage dressed like a living museum piece, limited to 250 examples worldwide. At $24,490 — roughly $3,000 more than the standard version — the privilege comes at a price. But it comes with concrete justification: the Elite finish, and above all a two-tone black and metallic bordeaux livery applied entirely by hand, requiring more than fourteen hours of work before the motorcycle leaves the line. This isn't cosmetics — it's goldsmithing.

Beneath this ceremonial shell beats the same 49-degree V-twin found in the standard Chief, though it would be a shame to reduce it to a mere transportation engine. With its 1,890cc air-cooled displacement, 90 horsepower, and above all 156 Nm of torque available from just 3,300 rpm, this old-school block delivers a frank, organic thrust that the large liquid-cooled twins from BMW or Harley-Davidson struggle to replicate in terms of pure sensation. The 103.2mm bore paired with a 113mm stroke gives the engine a decidedly long-stroke character, with slow, massive pulses you feel rising through the footpegs well before the redline comes into view. The belt drive and six-speed gearbox handle the rest — cleanly, without brutality.
The flip side of this mechanical generosity is weight. At 317 kilograms fully fueled, that's the reality of old-school American grand touring. The low 686mm seat height helps plant your feet on the ground, but maneuvering this battleship at a standstill takes practice. This is not a motorcycle for beginners, nor for those looking to filter through Parisian scooter traffic. The Chief Vintage 125th Anniversary targets a mature audience — likely already the owner of a large American cruiser — who appreciates long straight roads, cross-country road trips, and admiring glances in rally parking lots.

Indian didn't rely on style alone to justify the price tag. The electronics package is substantial: keyless ignition, three riding modes, ABS, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-inch color TFT display for navigation and infotainment management. Rear cylinder deactivation at idle or in slow-moving traffic reduces engine heat output — a detail appreciated in summer at red lights. It's a far cry from the vintage minimalism on display, and rightly so: a motorcycle at this price point must integrate what contemporary technology can offer without diluting the experience.

What this anniversary edition ultimately embodies is a kind of mechanical testament. Large air-cooled twins are squarely in the crosshairs of European emissions regulations, and each model year may be the last to enjoy them fully. Buying this Chief Vintage 125th Anniversary means betting on the longevity of a sensory pleasure that regulation is preparing to standardize out of existence. For the 250 buyers who get their hands on one, it's as much a matter of the heart as it is a heritage investment. Indian has managed to turn an anniversary into a sales argument. It's hard to hold that against them.
