Overview

Honda is stepping into the electric motorcycle market. A risk as much as a bold move from the world's leading motorcycle manufacturer. Teased for some time under the pseudonym EV Fun Concept, here is the WN7 in electrons and wheels. A roadster with a mid-size displacement engine, boasting the seriousness of Honda and electric ambitions... which will need to be appreciated.

WN7: an unprecedented designation, where the W symbolizes the wind, accompanied by an N for Naked and the number 7 to identify the power category. Wind Naked 7!!! Although its appearance and seriousness suggest a “electrified” CB1000, the reality is more distant.

It’s a Honda, there’s no doubt about it. Thoughtful and composed shapes, a timid originality, an impeccable appearance... almost everything contributes to identifying it as a typical machine from the manufacturer. Only the design mixing the technical shortcomings of a battery and a premium spirit engenders a bittersweet taste. The neo-sport-café CB1000R-style monobras is very flattering while the end-of-handlebar mirrors are fashionable without being appropriate. On the sides, transparent winglets accentuate the style. The WN7 must make a statement without vulgarity. It features a 5-inch TFT screen, the RoadSync multimedia tech, push-button (keyless) start, and a host of riding aids: HSTC torque control, cornering ABS, speed limiter, 4 Riding Modes *, a 4-level adjustable engine braking equivalence, and a walk-forward and walk-backward gear limited to 5 km/h.

On the engine front, it’s not exactly what you’d expect. Perhaps its "1000" appearance cultivated the hope of big watts. You’re going to have to settle for 18 kW, or just over 24 horsepower in nominal power. This is the level of an RE 400 Himalayan. However, the WN7 has much more peak power, with a value of 50 kW. Almost three times more and the equivalent of 68 horses. That’s what a Z 650 S produces, except... The torque is much more convincing with 100 Nm available. That’s truly the muscle of a 1000. Honda is launching with a few figures, with a 0 to 50 km/h swallowed in 3.9 seconds (like a CB 500 Hornet) - the 0 to 100 km/h is more telling, with a chrono of 4.6 sec.

The top speed is also announced, with a maximum of 129 km/h. That will please road safety. This is the velocity obtained with the 18 kW. But as you can extract up to 50 kW from the electron rotor... Enough to lift your heart?

In any case, you’re going to have to lift 217 kg. A non-negligible weight for a "mid-size" roadster but well-placed for an electric motorcycle. The 9.3 kWh lithium-ion battery will allow for an autonomy of 140 km, followed by charging episodes. Either you charge at home on a 6 kW system and it takes a long time to charge to the max / or 5 hours and a half with a standard outlet. Or... The WN7 is compatible with the CCS2 charging system for cars; thus, the charge could go from 20% to 80% in 30 min.

For the chassis, you immediately recognize the level of Honda quality, with Showa SFF-BP inverted forks, radial monoblock Nissin 4-piston brake calipers, 310 mm discs, a superb rear rim in a hyper-clean environment, and a rear monoshock. The transmission is ensured by a belt, the best adapted element for electric propulsion. The motorcycle doesn't really have a frame but uses the battery as a structural element, with aluminum parts to hold the elements of the chassis.

Until recently, entering the electric motorcycle market proved to be a reckless conquest, for adventurers without a safety net or brands created for that purpose. In the field of small machines, the offer is wide and the solutions are interesting for commuters. But when you attack larger machines, everything becomes complicated.

Zero Motorcycles seems to be doing alright but the brand remains marginal. BMW and Triumph worked on it without taking the step of commercialization, Kawasaki is trying several solutions (electric, hybrid, hydrogen) but the Z-E1 and Ninja-E1 struggle to convince, Harley felt the shock with the LiveWire... Historic manufacturers are struggling due to a lack of technological breakthroughs.

It’s Honda’s turn to enter this cold bath, with a motorcycle exuding pragmatism and the desire to convince. The solutions are not miraculous, the power is modest and the autonomy is contained... at first glance. Let’s give it the benefit of the doubt, its creators being committed to defending technological values that are the pride of the winged crest. Please note that the WN7 can be detuned to 11 kW and thus become accessible to the A1 license.
