Overview

Honda projects its vision of the future in this EV Outlier. This electric concept bike transports the manufacturer beyond 2030. That is at least how it sees its vision for motorcycles. With such a stylistic exercise, one is inclined to believe that the future will be as surprising. Unveiling itself at the Japan Mobility Show, the machine creates a sensation and opens a path between manga and the urban mobility of tomorrow.

Was the future written? It would be easy to think so, as the EV Outlier instinctively makes one think of the motorcycle from the film *Akira*. The overall line and the fairing front are strikingly inspired by Kaneda’s bike. Like it, its propulsion is ensured by two driven wheels.

This old fantasy, rarely realized, exists on the EV Outlier thanks to the installation of a motor in each wheel. An atypical but potentially formidable solution to ensure a high level of traction.

Contrary to what its sleek silhouette suggests, the Honda absolutely does not target sport. With a very rearward saddle and footrests very forward, the riding position and category of this machine would rather place it in the family of scooter-customs – somewhat like the extravagant NM4 Vultus and DN-01 (production models).

Technologically advanced, the Honda EV Outlier allows its designers to let loose in more directions. We discover a transparent fairing, a monocoque chassis structure, a parallelogram fork (of a type close to that of the Gold Wing), a bucket-type seat, adjustable footrests, a suspension placed horizontally under the chassis (like the Voxan models of the 2000s) and instrumentation of the next decade.

It is divided into two parts: a TFT screen on the tank displays the mode settings, the front engine torque setting and information such as the movement of the front and rear wheels depending on road conditions. The other, implanted on the handlebars and almost as wide as it, provides all the essential driving information; except on the edges, reserved for a retro-view powered by cameras.

It is a vision, a concept… There is no point in hoping for any data on power, weight or performance. But it gives an idea of what Honda has in mind. What will we see in future actual production?
