Overview
Can a Harley-Davidson truly claim the title of sporty roadster without being met with a smirk from a Triumph or a Ducati? With the 2018 XL 1200 CX Sportster Roadster, Milwaukee rises to the challenge and sends a clear message: you can do muscle with an air-cooled V-Twin. Here, we’re no longer talking about flashy chrome or a stretched-out riding position, but about a low handlebar, an inverted 43 mm fork, and a chopped rear fender. At 259 kg when fully fueled, it’s not a featherweight, but the stance is unambiguous. Harley is seeking to reconnect with a legacy of raw performance, a modern café-racer that wants to vibrate the asphalt more than the shop windows.

Under the 12.5-liter tank, the mythical 1202 cm3 Evolution engine delivers its arguments: 66 horsepower at 6000 rpm, which is modest, but its 96 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm is the master card. You have to play with the five-speed gearbox to keep it in its comfort zone, as this engine breathes better in the mid-range. Compared to a 48, the torque is higher, and that’s precisely what gives it a more nervous character, more suited to dynamic riding. Top speed is around 170 km/h, far from pure sportbikes, but the goal is elsewhere: to offer immediate sensations, a raspy sound, and a strong surge as soon as the light turns green.
The chassis and suspension confirm this orientation. The inverted fork and two lateral shock absorbers offer generous travel for a Sportster (112.5 mm at the front, 80 mm at the rear) and are even adjustable. The 785 mm seat allows for a good grip, even if the leaning position towards the tank recalls that you are on an engaged machine. The braking system, with its two 300 mm front discs and one 260 mm rear disc, does the job without being transcendent. It lacks the bite and modulation of a radial caliper, an obvious concession to the budget and the brand's philosophy. Tires in 120/70-19 and 150/70-18 sizes ensure good contact, and the announced lean angle of 31.1° leaves room for tight turns.
Who is the Harley-Davidson XL 1200 CX Sportster Roadster for? Certainly not a beginner, intimidated by its weight and temperament, nor a touring rider seeking comfort. Its audience is V-Twin enthusiasts who want a more agile and nervous motorcycle for the city and winding roads, without denying the Harley soul. At 12,990 euros new, it positioned itself as a characterful alternative to more technical European roadsters. Today, looking for a used harley-davidson xl 1200 cx sportster roadster, especially a 2017 or 2018 model, can be a good deal to acquire this unique proposition. It’s the Sportster best suited for active riding, an oddity in the range that proves that Milwaukee knows, when it wants to, to go off the beaten path.
